Walsh rides to title at Grand Nationals Found: 3 Days 10 Hours 9 Minutes ago The Hour - Joshua Walsh of Norwalk brought home a national championship after a weekend of competition at the National Bike League BMX Grand Nationals in Louisville, Ky.
A fifth grader at Brookside School, Walsh competed in the 9-year-old rookie division and was never headed in preliminaries, the semifinal or the championship event.
Walsh wasn't the only Norwalk resident to bring home some hardware from Louisville. Dixie D'Amelio finished sixth overall in the girls 5-7-year-old division.
Both Walsh and D'Amelio are in only their second season of BMX competition.
Going into the Grand Nationals, Walsh was ranked No. 1 in the nation for a 9-year-old rookie based on his No. 1 rankings in Connecticut and in a Northeast region that stretches from Virginia to Maine.
The youngster, who races up to four times a week at Connecticut's four BMX tracks in Trumbull, Bethel, Torrington and Meriden, stretched his winning streak to six straight national competitions with the win in Kentucky.
After winning every event he was in during two days of qualifying races and the semifinals, Walsh went wire-to-wire to win the Grand National finale.
In addition to his races in Connecticut, Walsh has also competed in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio this summer.
D'Amelio also advanced through the qualifying races and into the semifinals before logging her sixth-place finish in the finale in her division.
She went to Louisville as the top-ranked 5-7 girl in Connecticut and the region and with a No. 4 ranking nationally. Her sixth-place finish in the final assured a No. 5 national ranking.
While competing in many of the same regional events as Walsh, D'Amelio has also ridden in Louisiana and Tennessee so far this year.
While the Grand Nationals are over, the two local riders still have more competition facing them.
Both will compete Sunday in the state championships in Torrington, and later this month at the regional championship race in Woodward, Pa.

Charter Oak Health Plan welcomed in Norwalk Found: 5 Days 15 Hours 35 Minutes ago The Hour - NORWALK
By STEVE KOBAK
Hour Staff Writer
Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced Friday that the Norwalk Community Health Center is one of 13 facilities in the state taking part in the Charter Oak Health Plan
The Charter Oak Health Plan offers insurance to those who have been without coverage for six months or more.
Premiums for the plan range from $75 to $259 per month based on the income of the insured. Co-payments are $25 for doctor visits and $25 for visits to specialists. Mental health coverage is also provided.
The Charter Oak Health Plan will not refuse anyone coverage based on pre-existing conditions, Rell said.
"The Charter Oak network continues to expand each week as we knew it would," said Rell. "The addition of these centers means Charter Oak patients will have access to affordable health care in every corner of the state."
But Rell says her administration is working to build the network, predicted to eventually cover 19,000 people.
The other sites throughout Connecticut include health care facilities in Hartford, Middletown, Torrington, Norwich, Willimantic, Bridgeport, Waterbury and New Haven.
The health centers provide a range of services including primary care, prenatal care, dental services, mental health counseling, HIV care, family planning, homeless support services and substance abuse counseling.

Norwalk angler a winner in annual bluefish tournament Found: 1 Week 17 Hours 4 Minutes ago The Hour - East Norwalk angler Bryan Thivierge took fourth place in this year's WICC, Key Auto Group Greatest Bluefish Contest, coming in as a $1,000 winner.
The staff at Fisherman's World, where Bryan's fish was weighed in at 15.77 pounds, were delighted as well. Bryan's prize-winning bluefish was caught in Norwalk Harbor on a bunker chunk. Congratulations Bryan!
First place once again showed up in the far western Sound at Jack's B&T in City Island N.Y. That $25,000 fish weighed in at 17.83 pounds and was caught by William Theis. Second place went to Richard Brown, his $10,000 fish weighing in at 17.58 pounds at Captain Morgan's. Third place was again weighed at Jack's B&T at 17.23 pounds by Chris James and was worth $3,000. Fourth place and fifth place winners each received a $1,000 prize for their fish.
The sixth through 20th place winners each receive $200 and weights there ranged from a top of 15.47 pounds to the 20th-place bluefish weighing 12.74 pounds. Additionally, port prizes were awarded for the biggest fish weighed in at each weigh station in addition to the grand prize list. Weights there ranged from a high of 12.60 pounds to a low of 8.15 pounds. Dan St. George won the Port Prize at Fisherman's World for a bluefish weighing 12.60 pounds.
The winners will likely be made official in the days ahead. Anglers now look forward to competing again next year.
Fishing Reports
The gang at Fisherman's World were all happy over a winning bluefish finally showing up in this fishing capital of Fairfield County. Meantime with the contest over, anglers continue to enjoy excellent bluefish action. During the day, there is plenty of action at the reefs like 28C, 11B and Green's Ledge. Bluefish are also in Norwalk Harbor almost on a daily basis. With plentiful schools of bunker all throughout the area, fishing is good. David Smith has been scoring well on bluefish from shore inside Norwalk Harbor with blues to 10 pounds on a daily basis.
Not all the action is bluefish. Dave Colby had stripers of 34.6 and 24 pounds, fishing bunker at 28C Brian St. George fished a live bunker bait and was rewarded with a 29-pound, 10-ounce striper off the Islands. There are plenty of bass around. The hard part is getting a bait through the bluefish to the stripers.
This is the last weekend of the fluke season. Catches continue to be made at all the usual fluke spots. Porgy action continues to be very good around Can # 1, buoy 28C in 30 to 50 feet of water.
Offshore activity also remains pretty consistent. Matt Perry and Jason Behon fished with Greg Hughes aboard We Three on the west wall of Hudson Canyon and returned with seven yellowfin and two white marlin to their credit. Ken Korchman picked up a 65-pound Wahoo trolling the Green Machine on his last offshore trip. Matt Baryshyan fished aboard the Amanda Lee and tallied 16 yellowfin and two hammerhead sharks at 250 and 500 pounds chunking the offshore grounds.
Last but certainly not least was a report from store employee Justin Solis who made the run to the Housatonic River in Cornwall this week and enjoyed catching brown trout to 17 inches and some rainbows, too, during the Isonychia hatch.
Captain Sal Tardella of "My Bonnie" Charters didn't get involved with the bluefish tournament, but he had a busy week, nevertheless.
Wednesday's trip was with Peter Ackerman of New Rochelle N.Y,. and his daughter, Erika, and Peter's brother, Larry Ackerman of Westport. They spent the day fishing in deep water, where everyone had steady action with large blues up to 11 pounds and some nice porgies.
On Thursday, Tardella had Richard Woods of Pennsylvania, with his son, Richard Jr. of Rochester N.Y., for their annual "My Bonnie" fishing trip. The skipper started out around the Norwalk Islands, where things were a bit slow; so he moved towards Westport, where they found schoolie bass up to 24 inches. He then moved into the middle of the Sound and did some chunking -- coming up with nice blues up to 9 pounds and a few porgies -- with one measuring 14 inches.
Saturday, Tardella sailed with regulars, Derek Shapiro of Greenwich, and his father, Sidney, a resident of Brooklyn. They had a wonderful day, pulling in bluefish from 5 to 11 pounds off of 28C, as well as some nice porgies.
Monday's trip was with Gary Lattrell, golf course superintendent at in Quaker Hills Country Club in Pawling, N.Y., returning for his fourth trip this season. He found great action just five minutes after leaving the dock -- with bluefish under a large bunker school off of Wilson Point. The blitz continued for two hours. He then moved to Westport and found more blues as well as some striped bass.
On Tuesday "My Bonnie" welcomed first-timer Lou Owen of New Milford and his 13-year old son Louis. Tardella headed toward Southport, and got the Owens into a mix of large bluefish and schoolie bass. Young Louis caught his first striped bass ever -- using a bucktail, tipped with a sandworm. The tally for the day was about 15 fish -- all released except for a few bluefish taken home for the evening dinner.
This week, Eric at Westport Outfitters reports that on Saturday, Captain Steve was out with the Kessinger family where they had tons of bait and several blues to six pounds fishing near Frost Point. Then they moved into mid sound where they found blues hammering schools of bunker.
Our good friend Captain Rob Finch took the weekend off from charters as well as fishing in the tourney and escaped farther to the west where he was on board his "auxiliary" craft. Rob fished both Saturday and Sunday off of Greenwich and Stamford and had blues to 10 pounds as well as a consistent number of bass in the 26-29 inch range. Rob noted that the larger blues that were boated were all on the troll, having to be enticed with something to chase. This helps reiterate what we have been saying about how this time of year is a great time to get into some deeper water tube dragging on our lead core combos for bigger bass and blues.
DEP reports
With good flows and moderate temperatures, conditions for trout fishing should be great for the Labor Day weekend. As we move into late summer, it's time for trout anglers to include terrestrial fly patterns in their arsenal.
Advance notice: DEP currently is planning to conduct its annual electrofishing survey of the river from September 9 through 11. Anglers should expect West Branch flows to drop to 100 cfs or less beginning late September 8th and lasting through at least the 11th.
Stripped bass fishing is good to excellent on the local reefs especially during the night. Again, live bait is the ticket for scoring on trophy sized linesiders. Also, schoolie fishing is pretty good in the tidal rivers.
Bluefish fishing is good to excellent throughout LIS. The Race is the usual hot spot especially in the early morning. Snapper fishing is fair to good.
