Simms ready to bring down Raines
Found: 2 Weeks 21 Hours 47 Minutes ago
The Hour - BRIDGEPORT By STEVE GEOGHEGAN Hour Staff Writer There's no doubt in "Marvelous" Tarvis Simms' mind that he's ready for Saturday's title bout. Simms (22-0-1, 11 knockouts) will be vying for the ABA Americas Middleweight (160 pounds) Championship as he takes on Delray "The Rainmaker" Raines (13-3, nine knockouts) in the co-main event of Sal Musumeci's Final Forum Boxing event at the Arena at Harbor Yard. "I feel great," Simms said on Wednesday after receiving a key to the city from Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. "Everything is going to plan. Now it's time for me to go out and execute." Simms, a Norwalk native and twin brother of two-time super welterweight champion "Tremndous" Travis Simms, was supposed to take on Robert Frazier for the title but just a week ago, Frazier had to back out of the fight due to a medical suspension. Frazier, who fought Simms to a draw three years ago, suffered head trauma in his last match against Attila Kovacs, a 10th round TKO loss, in May. "We went after this fighter because the world champion (Kelly Pavlik) is a taller fighter and we want to get used to fighting that type of a fighter," Simms' manager Angelo Campanella said. Raines, 22, stands in at 6-foot-1 and is coming off a second-round TKO of Marcus McDonald in August. Simms, 37, turned in a dominant six-round unanimous decision over Carl Daniels, also in August, after a layoff of 17 months. Simms, a southpaw who stands in at 5-9, said he has fought many tall fighters in his amateur and pro career so Raines' height won't pose a problem he can't solve. "We're going to be aggressive but it's going to be a controlled aggression," he said. "We're going to work behind our jab and hopefully he's able to stand up to it. "I've been sparring with cruiserweights (190 pounders) who are 6-2, 6-3," Simms added. "I've been able to stop them with body shots." Some may point out that Simms' inactivity could be a hindrance to him, especially going against a fighter who has been very active and has won his last five fights, four by knockout, dating back to November of 2007. Campanella, also a Norwalk native, sees it a different way. He doesn't think Simms doesn't has the wear-and-tear some boxers endure over the years. "If you look at his last fight, Tarvis and his opponent were the same age but the commentators (on ESPN2) made mention that Tarvis looked 10 years younger in look, style and speed," Campanella said. "It's not only my opinion but the whole world sees it. He's a young 37." "We want momentum now," Campanella added. "And we want to fight again before the end of the year. We're not afraid to fight anybody." If Simms does well, a fight with John Duddy of Ireland could be slated for November. Simms and Campanella were appreciative to Raines for taking the fight on short notice but Simms said his training in Redding, Pa., the past few weeks has been intense and it has prepared him well. Travis Simms, who lost his title fight to Joachim Alcine in July of 2007 at the Arena, will be in attendance along with John Harris, who trained both Simms brothers in their younger years, and Fred Kitt, who came up through the ranks with the Simms brothers. Tarvis Simms, who will be fighting in his first title bout, is hoping to be victorious the way his brother was in his first title fight in 2002. "I look forward to going in there and making quick work," Tarvis said. "Nothing in the world is going to stop me. I'm just so excited and overwhelmed to have the opportunity to perform here in Fairfield County." The other co-main event features Tony "TNT" Grano (14-0-1, 12 knockouts) of Hebron against Mike "Oak Tree" Brown for the ABA heavyweight title. Stamford's Francisco Palacios will also be in action on the undercard fighting in the lightweight class. There will be seven or eight bouts scheduled with the action to get started at 7:30 p.m. The Simms-Raines title bout will be the last fight of the evening, taking place at approximately 9 p.m. The fights will not be televised live. "This is a fight that will line him (Tarvis) up for a world title fight," said Musumeci, who also received a key to the city. "We've got a good, action packed undercard and two great main event fights." Tickets are still available to those 18 and over via Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com) or by visiting the Arena box office. For more information, contact the Arena at (203) 345-2400. ...
