Nonprofits get $100,000 to fight childhood obesity

Orlando Sentinel - Two nonprofit groups that serve Orange County children have been awarded $100,000 each for obesity prevention. Get Active Orlando will use the money to increase physical activity in the city's Parramore district, and the Institute for America's Health will educate fourth- and fifth-graders on how advertising campaigns promote unhealthy foods and sedentary lifestyles. The grants are part of $800,000 given out statewide by the Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, the philanthropic arm of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. The foundation plans to grant $8 million total during a four-year campaign targeting childhood obesity....

Beloved peacock disappears from rehab center

Orlando Sentinel - A wayward peacock that blew into the Lake Bennett Health and Rehabilitation Center after the 2004 hurricanes is gone. Resident Earl Nicholson, who enjoyed watching the bird, is now hoping for its return or the donation of another bird. "It brought a lot of joy to the people who live here," said Nicholson, 79. "He disappeared about 10 days ago." Nicholson guessed that the bird may have been killed after he heard a rifle shot in the middle of the night around the time it disappeared, but he hasn't found any evidence of its demise.
