Catoosa County News - With just one item on the ballot Sept. 16, voter turnout was slim.Early and Advance Voting accumulated 569 voters while 138 mail-in ballots were received.On Tuesday, 2266 voters cast ballots on whether a one-cent sales tax should continue or not.Total votes in favor of the SPLOST, special-purpose local-option sales tax, were 2002 or 89.57 percent, while 233 or 10.43 percent voted against its continuation. Catoosa County has 34,737 active registered voters. Total voter turnout was 6.52 percent.The SPLOST dollars, $56 million, will begin when the current SPLOST ends. Since the first vote in 1994 approving Catoosa County’s first SPLOST $97 million has come in assisting with various capital expenditure projects from county roads to buildings.One area that will be a focus with the next SPLOST according to J. Olney Meadows, Catoosa projects administrator, is bridge improvements in coordination with state aid provided by the Georgia Department of Transportation.“GDOT provides outstanding technical expertise and advice and their funding targets half the estimated project cost and usually ranges from 40 to 60% of actual bids,” he said. “The city or county must bid out the project and make up any cost difference between what GDOT provides and the bid price.”According to Meadows, SPLOST dollars will assist with projects such as a Cooper Road bridge replacement, Page Road at Chickamauga Creek culvert project and repairs on Houston Valley Road at Dry Creek; Three Notch Road at Peavine Creek; Keith Road at Little Tiger Creek; Bandy Road at East Chickamauga Creek; Yates Spring Road at Little Chickamauga Creek; Mount Vernon Road At Sugar Creek; Potts Road at Peavine Creek and Peavine Road at Peavine Creek.Voters who chose yes: 2002Voters who chose no: 233Total voter turn out 6.52 percentTotal who voted 2266 out of 34737 registered voters. 2009 SPLOST - What will be spent and where:A portion of the SPLOST is shared with Ringgold, Fort Oglethorpe and the Catoosa Utility District Authority, those amounts are, $2.5, $7.1 and $4 million, respectively.Sewer projects take up another $16 million with $5 million for West Chickamauga basin, $10.75 million for Peavine basin, Georgia Highway 151 and East Chickamauga projects.Roads, bridges and stormwater projects will receive the next largest share of $9.86 million.Retiring county indebtedness for $2.9 million including $2 million for the Governmental Building, $500,000 for the 911 system and $400,000 for sheriff’s vehicles is also in the list.Recreation associations are proposed to receive additional monies to assist with more improvements on facilities. Commissioners are planning $2 million with $500,000 for each Ringgold, Boynton and Fort Oglethorpe Recreation Associations and $500,000 for Jack Mattox Recreational Complex.Communications equipment for 911 emergency services are earmarked for $500,000, fire and rescue equipment for $2 million, fire and rescue buildings $2 million, while sheriff’s vehicles is $1 million. Public works vehicles will receive $1.5 million.Additional funds are being set aside for the Catoosa County Courthouse including $100,000 for replacement of fuel tank, $1 million for Courthouse repairs.Woodstation is expected to see $20,000 for its walking track and lights.
