Volkswagen plant is good news for Catoosa, Walker
Found: 1 Month 6 Days 19 Hours 43 Minutes ago
Catoosa County News - With the news of Volkswagen’s decision to construct a new automotive plant in Chattanooga, folks in North Georgia are excited about the possibilities that such a plant could bring to the area.“This is certainly big news for us,” state Sen. Jeff Mullis of Chickamauga said Tuesday. “With the decline in the housing market and other industry in the area, this could potentially provide the relief that our local economy needs.”Sen. Mullis, who represents Catoosa and Walker, said the new plant would mean about 2,000 new jobs in the Chattanooga market. But he said the potential of additional jobs being created in support industry in the greater Chattanooga area, which includes Walker and Catoosa counties, is the real icing on the cake.“The support industry that the plant will bring with it could be huge for people in this area,” Mullis said. The support industry referred to by Mullis is manufacturers that would supply specific parts for the cars being built at the plant. Many have speculated that as many as 14,000 of these support jobs could potentially be created in the wake of the plant’s construction.“We are actively talking to different individuals about what these possibilities could mean for us here in North Georgia,” Mullis said Tuesday.Mullis said that any real impact on the local economy from Volkswagen’s decision to come to Chattanooga is months away.“It’ll probably be a year before we begin to see the real effects of what this new industry will mean for North Georgia,” Mullis said. Volkswagen Group of America Inc. said it will produce a new midsize sedan designed specifically for the North American consumer and invest $1 billion in the economy.Sites in Alabama and Michigan were also considered for the plant, which is part of Volkswagen's strategy to increase its presence in America. Volkswagen, Europe's biggest automaker, closed its last U.S. production facility in 1988.Christian Wulff, the governor of Lower Saxony and a member of Volkswagen's supervisory board, told The Associated Press that the company picked Chattanooga after the board debated the merits of the location and its benefits. The company statement said the plant near the Georgia and Alabama borders would create 2,000 direct jobs and "add a significant number of jobs in related sectors."A statement from parent Volkswagen AG said the company approved up to $991.4 million to build the facility, with the plant aiming for a capacity of 150,000 cars a year. It plans to start production in 2011.Tennessee officials have not released details of what it is giving Volkswagen but the company's statement said the "incentives are tied to job creation and capital investment. Additional support includes assistance for public infrastructure and job training..."VW picked Tennessee 25 years after Nissan Motor Co. became the first foreign automaker in the South at Smyrna."Chattanooga is an excellent fit for the Volkswagen culture, having an exceptional quality of life and a long manufacturing tradition,"said Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. The VW plant will be located at the 1,350-acre site at Enterprise South Industrial Park near interstates 75 and 24, The park has long been seeking an auto assembly plant.Chattanooga previously lost out on the $1.3 billion Toyota Motor Corp. plant that is being built near Tupelo, Miss., and the $1.2 billion Kia Motors Corp. plant that went to West Point, Ga.Volkswagen holds only a 2 percent share of the U.S. market. VW officials have said the company intends to more than triple its U.S. sales to 1 million by 2018.The German state of Lower Saxony owns more than 20 percent of Volkswagen.Wulff said the new plant in the U.S., in addition to its factories in India and Russia, is part of the company's strategy to become the world's No. 2 automaker. The automaker has said the surging euro has pushed along plans for a new production facility. The 15-nation currency hit a record high of $1.6038 on Tuesday, making goods exported from Germany more expensive in the United States. While competing against Alabama and Michigan, Tennessee officials in recent weeks approved $1.25 million for work at the Chattanooga site that was once part of an Army ammunition plant complex. State officials have not released the incentive package that was used as bait to attract Volkswagen. Also, the South offers ample highway and rail connections and hundreds of existing suppliers but its main attraction is a pool of workers who have shown at other European and Asian assembly plants that they can live without the United Auto Workers.Industry executives and analysts have said there is plenty of room for more auto makers in the region, as long as the plants are at least 40 or 50 miles apart to avoid competing for skilled workers.Volkswagen earlier this year relocated its North America headquarters from suburban Detroit to northern Virginia. Volkswagen's only other North American plant is in Puebla, Mexico. The company closed its last U.S. production facility near Pittsburgh in 1988.Foreign auto assembly plants closest to Chattanooga are Honda in Lincoln, Ala.; the plant Kia Motors Corp. is building at West Point, Ga., and Nissan at Smyrna, all about 100 miles away. Tennessee is also corporate home to Nissan North America, which dedicates a new headquarters July 22 in the Nashville suburb of Franklin.Shares of Volkswagen, whose brands include VW, Audi, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti and Seat, were up 2 percent to 173.71 euros ($276.18) after the announcement.CLICK ON THESE LINKSFEEDBACK: Send a letter to the editorSUBSCRIBE: Get The Catoosa County News each WednesdayGO BACK:Return to our homepage...

Ringgold looking at ways to offset rising fuel prices
Found: 1 Month 6 Days 23 Hours 13 Minutes ago
Catoosa County News - The impact of the cost of gasoline is playing a role in future steps that the city of Ringgold is considering. Two proposals were approved for the city attorney to review and prepare potential ordinances relating to the increasing costs of gasoline.Council member Bill McMillon brought both ideas to the council finding unanimous support. The first measure which could be added to Ringgold’s books after review could institute a gas surcharge to tickets issued by police.“Other communities are already doing this,” he said. “We need to offset some of the increasing gas costs.”McMillon suggested a $15 per ticket surcharge. “This money can stay in the city rather than going to the state,” he said.Another option that many others may soon be taking advantage of as prices for fuels rise is changing to vehicles such as golf carts to move around the city. The council voted to request the city attorney to prepare an ordinance for review establishing Ringgold as a golf cart and pedestrian friendly city. The Ringgold City Council is scheduled to hold a regular monthly meeting Monday, July 28 at 7 p.m. at City Hall at 150 Tennessee Street in Ringgold. For more information about the meeting, call (706) 935-3061.Based upon a model set by Peachtree City, Ga., Ringgold will be researching options to make its streets more accessible and friendly to those wishing to use golf carts or walk around the community, McMillon said.“As gas goes up more and more, we know that there are going to be more options like Hydrogen vehicles and golf carts,” he said. “I’d like to see us have a golf cart friendly city.”Council member Terry Crawford said his main concern is to make sure that in the process that safe intersections and crossings are created for these vehicles to use.“There are some intersections that are not safe in a car,” he said.In the vein of pedestrian friendly Crawford praised the success of the pedestrian crosswalks with stop signs added to LaFayette Street.“Those signs have done wonders,” he said.City Manager Dan Wright said that he hopes to partner with the county to request addition of similar signage on crosswalks on U.S. 41. Wright said after seeing the success on LaFayette Street one in town neighborhood, which has several youth crossing the street to go to school, requested a similar option. The council approved the addition of crosswalks and pedestrian crossing signs on Tennessee Street near Lodgestone subdivision and in other areas of the city where it is deemed necessary. In other business Monday, July 14, at Ringgold City Hall, Ringgold City Council voted unanimously to:* Approve a request by Nell Gamble for a variance on the front setback on North Street from 40’ to 20’ for property at corner of Mountain Street.* Approve a request by Brian House for a variance to hang a banner during 1890’s Day through to the election in November for property on Nashville Street,* Approve the purchase of a trailer and installation of trailer hitch on Crown Victoria to move the speed radar signs for approximate cost of $750. * Approve the purchase of a 2008 Crown Victoria police car from L.G.S. for $25,627.13. * Approve purchase of four by four-commercial tractor from Yancey Brothers with an American Products sidearm through a state contract for $63,748.* Approve repairs at the Ringgold Water Plant by Lanier Contracting for $15,637.* Approve request to purchase Oda Log Hydrogen Sulfide Gas Logger for sewer department and Regional User Odor and Corrosion Control Monitoring at the sewer outfalls. * Approve motion of intent to roll back tax millage rate .044 mills to 2.707 and officially vote on the measure in August.* Approve annual update resolution for the Section 125 POP Plan relating to employee health insurance.* Deny a request by Jim Powell for payment for water removal at the former district attorney’s office on Nashville Street.* Accept the resignation of City Attorney Steve Farrow and appoint new city attorney Jim Bisson of Minor Bell and Neal.* Approve the placement of a bronze plaque at the Ringgold Depot highlighting the city council and companies involved in the restoration project of the building.CLICK ON THESE LINKSFEEDBACK: Send a letter to the editorSUBSCRIBE: Get The Catoosa County News each WednesdayGO BACK:Return to our homepage...
