Found: 3 Weeks 2 Days 1 Hour 10 Minutes ago Catoosa County News - INCLUDES TWO VIDEOSStudents step back in historyAbraham Lincoln talks to the studentsCHICKAMAUGA -- About 1,400 students turned out Wednesday at the re-enactment site for 145th Battle of Chickamauga. The students, from schools in Northwest Georgia and South Tennessee schools, visited battle sites and encampments.Walker County is commemorating the Battle of Chickamauga, one of the county’s most significant events, with a three-day re-enactment this weekend, Sept. 19-21. The event is expected to draw, in addition to the students, thousands of re-enactors and spectators.The Battle of Chickamauga took place Sept. 19-21, 1863, and was one of America’s bloodiest battles. Walker County’s 145th anniversary commemoration of this battle will take place at Davis Crossroads in McLemore Cove.Another round of students is expected Thursday and a final round Friday morning.More than 4,000 students, including many from the Walker County and Chickamauga school systems, are expected to visit the battlegrounds before the 145th Battle of Chickamauga officially opens with a speech by Vice President Dick Cheney at 1 p.m. Friday.VIDEO: Students step back in historyTo launch external video player, click hereOn Wednesday, students gathered in various groups and visited each battle site and the encampments, including Dennis Boggs’s Abe Lincoln presentation, the Naval Museum of Port Columbus, and the 13th United States Colored Troops (USCT) recruiting station, to name a few.The students were given demonstrations of Civil War-time tea bag making, what Civil War time candy was like, period dancing, and how Civil War soldier’s guns were loaded.The many different schools to attend included Naomi Elementary in LaFayette, Saint Jude’s Catholic School in Chattanooga, Davis Elementary in Trenton, West View Elementary in Chattanooga, Red Bank Middle School, East Lake Elementary, Bright School Elementary in Chattanooga, and Meigs North in Decatur, Tenn.“Our students have been learning about the causes of the Civil War and some of the events of the Civil War, like Fort Sumter,” Naomi Elementary fifth-grade social studies teacher Mike Ware said his 83 students who attended School Days. “They have been talking about the Battle of Gettysburg and they have been talking about the main people involved in the Civil War. … So they have been covering the main people and events of the Civil War.” “They are really excited about being here and they have actually been going home and looking up links on the Internet (about the Battle of Chickamauga),” Ware said.Ware said the students plan to return for the battle re-enactments by using their tickets.Nora Monteith of Saint Jude’s Catholic School in Chattanooga said, “We have brought 40 students out here today. … We felt that this would be a really good background for our students.”VIDEO: Lincoln presenter Dennis BoggsTo launch external video player, click hereCLICK ON THESE LINKSFEEDBACK: Send a letter to the editorSUBSCRIBE: Get The Catoosa County News each WednesdayGO BACK:Return to our homepage...
