Catoosa County News - The 2 million people expected to pass through the Georgia Visitor Information Center off of Interstate 75 near Ringgold next year will have something new to listen to: Georgia music. In an effort to keep Georgia on everyone’s minds, Ringgold was selected as one of nine of the 11 welcome centers around the state to play a collection of songs recorded by Georgia musicians. Among the featured artists are Little Richard, James Brown, Otis Redding, Trisha Yearwood, the B-52’s and the Allman Brothers.“A lot of people are surprised by the amount of music, and they don’t realize that some of the songs that are on there are from either a Georgia artist (who either wrote the music or sang it),” said Elaine Watkins, manager of the I-75 visitor center near Ringgold.“The Soundtrack of your Life,” a partnership between the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, was turned on at 10 a.m. on Aug. 15 at the Augusta, Columbus, Kingsland, Lavonia, Ringgold, Savannah, Tallapoosa, Valdosta and West Point centers. “We welcomed 12 million visitors to our centers last year, which indicated to us that these are the perfect locations to showcase our musical history and attractions to Georgia visitors,” said Charlie Gatlin, the economic development department’s Deputy Commissioner for Tourism and Marketing. “Georgia artists have influenced generations of musicians around the world and we hope visitors will enjoy hearing their music.”Banners and signs featuring some of Georgia’s better-known musicians greet visitors at the information centers. The music and associated commentary are designed to entertain and educate travelers, encouraging them to visit the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon, which showcases more than 450 Georgia musicians including Little Richard, James Brown, Otis Redding, Trisha Yearwood, the B-52’s and the Allman Brothers. The Hall of Fame is producing a series of CDs similar to “The Soundtrack of Your Life” that will reflect the diversity of Georgia’s musical landscape, officials said. Lisa Love, director of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, put together the list of artists to be featured on the CDs. Jeffrey Tatum, the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s director of Visitor Information Services, selected the artists featured on the signage.“We wanted the selections to reflect Georgia's diverse musical landscape by including the legacy artists and some of the more under-the-radar yet incredible artists like Sonia Leigh,” said Love. “We made sure the commentary before and after each song made the ‘Georgia connection,’ and named the hometowns and communities associated with the artists.”The Department of Economic Development is the state's sales and marketing arm. The agency attracts new business, encourages the expansion of existing industry and small businesses, and locates new markets for Georgia products. It also markets Georgia to tourists and promotes the state as a location for film, music and digital entertainment projects, officials said.“Georgia has such a diverse group of artists and I tried to combine images of the seasoned artists with the young stars of today,” said Tatum. “I just wish we had more space to feature more of the artists on the CDs.”For more information, visit exploregeorgia.orgOn the Web:Georgia Visitor Information Center Georgia Music Hall of Fame Trisha Yearwood Otis Redding Allman Brothers B-52’s James Brown Little Richard Did you know? The music scene in Georgia is active, growing and full of history.
