Number of registered voters swells in Catoosa, Walker ... Found: 1 Month 1 Week 5 Days 23 Hours 48 Minutes ago Catoosa County News - People in Catoosa and Walker counties are registering in droves for the upcoming election.Walker now has more than 35,000 voters on record, while Catoosa has nearly 40,000. Monday was the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election.Catoosa elections supervisor Donna Bomar said of the numbers her office has registered in the past several days, “We have done a bunch.”According to Bomar, interest in the election can be contributed without question to the presidential race.“This race is historic,” Bomar said. “We have a black on one ticket, with a woman on the other. So people are very interested in how this race will end.”According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, more than 406,000 new Georgia voters have registered this year, as of Oct. 1.Georgia has had both early voting and voter registration going on for the last several weeks throughout the state. As of Oct. 6, in Catoosa about 2,500 had already cast ballots in person; in Walker, more than 650 had cast ballots. These numbers do not include absentee ballots that have been returned by mail to the elections offices.“What is surprising is the number of those registering for the first time among the 60, 70, and 80-plus crowd,” Bomar said.Bomar said this senior demographic is by far the largest to turn out compared to other demographic groups newly registering to vote in Catoosa County.“It is very surprising,” Bomar said. In Walker County, elections supervisor Barbara Berry said the number of registered voters has climbed to an estimated 35,450, just shy of the county record of nearly 36,000.“The turnout has been great,” Berry said. “Monday we were registering 10 to 15 people about every half hour.”Catoosa County had 39,634 registered voters as of Oct. 1. Bomar said her office has registered about 169 new voters in the last four days in Catoosa.“In 2004 we registered 222 voters at this point, but this year we have registered 276,” Bomar said. The number of active voters in Georgia has grown by more than 850,000 since the last presidential election in 2004, when Republican incumbent George W. Bush faced Democratic challenger John Kerry. According to the Secretary of State’s office, there are 5.6 million registered voters in Georgia.
