Echo Hill Elementary ready for first classes
Found: 1 Month 3 Weeks 1 Day 12 Hours 59 Minutes ago
The Gazette - MARION and#8212; Principal Dan Ludwig and 67 fellow staff members have been eagerly preparing to welcome 520-plus students today to Linn-Mar's newest attendance center, Echo Hill Elementary School.Overall, the Linn-Mar school district is expecting 6,280 students, 200 more than last year, for today's initial day of classes. The first thing that new Echo Hill students will probably learn is that their school is named for a nearby landmark where Collins Radio (now Rockwell) engineers, in the 1950s, first bounced a video image off the moon between two satellite dishes. The successful transmission, accomplished over a milelong stretch of road just east of the school, was a key step in the worldwide growth of an emerging electronic product called television. The name was suggested by Mark Seidl, whose children attended Oak Ridge.Opening the $10 million, 77,000-square-foot kindergarten through fifth grade building has actually been the culmination of five-plus years of work for Ludwig. The former Bowman Woods third and fifth-grade teacher was actually tabbed for his present job when nearby Oak Ridge School was in the construction phase before opening as a K-8 building in 2003.Ludwig helped open Oak Ridge, served as K-5 principal as long as those grades were in the building, guided Echo Hill through its construction phase and then gathered up his staff and moved it to the new building.Echo Hill Elementary, with an official address of 400 Echo Hill Rd, is located off Alburnett Road north of Oak Ridge, which has been converted into a middle school serving grades 6, 7 and 8.The new elementary has 24 classrooms (four sections at each grade level), a science room, 10 support rooms, a gym, art/music room and a cafeteria/multipurpose room with a built-in stage. It also has a state-of-the-art, closed loop geothermal heating and cooling system.Echo Hill is a sister school to Linn Grove Elementary School, which opened last fall on the other side of the Linn-Mar school district. The two schools, designed by OPN Architects and modeled on College Community's Prairie Ridge Elementary School, use the same floor plan but have different wall color and carpet designs.General contractor for both schools was Kleiman Construction....

Highland denied repeat title
Found: 2 Months 3 Weeks 3 Days 1 Hour 5 Minutes ago
The Gazette - FORT DODGE and#8212; Newell-Fonda has another opportunity for a happy ending.Alisa Christensen hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning to put Newell-Fonda ahead for good, and the eighth-ranked Mustangs ended No. 5 Highland's bid for a title repeat, 4-1, in a Class 1A semifinal at the state softball tournament last night at the Rogers Sports Complex.Newell-Fonda (34-9) advances to face No. 2 Martensdale-St. Marys for the championship at noon today. MSM (32-5) defeated Alburnett, 2-0, Friday. The Mustangs reached the finals of the state basketball tournament in March, but fell short to Springville.Highland did not trail at any point in its run to the 2007 title and did not face a deficit in its first-round win over Southeast Webster on Tuesday. It did last night, though, and couldn't overcome it."I don't think anybody out here was better than us. We just happened to get beat tonight," said Highland Coach Carrie Wieland. The Huskies finished 29-7.Scheduled for 7:30 p.m., the game began around 9:50 after a 13-inning marathon between West Des Moines Valley and Linn-Mar put the proceedings on Diamond 1 far behind schedule. It started well enough for the Huskies. Mustangs shortstop Kelly Johnson was called for interference when colliding with Highland baserunner Becky Kucera between third base and home in the second inning. Kucera was awarded home, and the Huskies held a 1-0 lead.Highland pitcher Ashlee Simon did not give up a hit until the fourth, but it was a doozy. Christensen laced a double to center field to put the Mustangs in front, 2-1.The Mustangs added two insurance runs and#8212; on a wild pitch and an error and#8212; in the sixth inning."We didn't do a good job baserunning, we didn't score runs when we needed to and our inexperience defensively played a part," Wieland said.Simon had 11 strikeouts, finishing her season with 423.n Contact the writer: (319) 368-8857 or jeff.linder@gazcomm.com...
