Angerer takes out frustrations
Found: 4 Weeks 20 Hours 52 Minutes ago
The Gazette - IOWA CITY and#8212; Few athletes have experienced the depths Iowa middle linebacker Pat Angerer went through last fall. That's what made Saturday's start and#8212; his first as a Hawkeye and#8212; so sweet for the junior from Bettendorf.Angerer, 21, recorded eight tackles in the 17-5 win against Iowa State. In the fourth quarter he stopped a screen pass for a 1-yard gain, leading to an Iowa State punt."It happened so fast," Angerer said. "That was my guy and my responsibility, and we were in Cover-1 and I was supposed to take that guy. (ISU's Alexander Robinson) was a little slippery there but he finally went down."But playing and finding success is just one piece in Angerer's personal puzzle. He suffered through mononucleosis and multiple injuries last year. He thought about quitting but decided to stick it out, mostly because of his family."It's been a long hard road," Angerer said. "I almost packed my bags a couple of times. I almost quit and made that decision, but I'm really blessed."Angerer became emotional when he talked about giving football another shot."I was hurt and people don't realize when you're hurt, it's so depressing," he said. "I was just real depressed last year, real down. I couldn't even watch football last year and#8212; that's how much it affected me."I blamed football for all my troubles, and that wasn't really it."Angerer returned with a passion and ended camps as co-No. 1 at middle linebacker with sophomore Jacody Coleman. He didn't start the first two games but has made an impact. He has 13 total tackles and two interceptions.Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said Angerer remains even with Coleman and both likely will split time."Pat couldn't have had a worse year last year from a personal standpoint...," Ferentz said. "Pat was never Pat last fall, and understandably so. ... He's had a good camp and certainly played well today and that was a big part of our win, too. You know, it's good to see. Those are good stories, great to see guys hang tough and have some success out there." Scott DochtermanChopping blockThe Big 12 officiating crew called both teams for 15-yard chop block penalties.Iowa State's came on Phillip Bates' interception to Iowa safety Brett Greenwood in the second quarter, so it was declined. The call on Iowa counted and it crippled what looked to be certain points for the Hawkeyes in the first half.On the drive after Greenwood's interception, Iowa moved to ISU's 10. On second-and-5, tight end Brandon Myers was called for a chop block, moving Iowa back 15 yards and essentially killing a drive that ended with Daniel Murray's 50-yard field goal sailing wide left.A chop block is called when two blockers are on a defender and one blocker goes for the defender's legs while the other stays engaged up top. These aren't called very often, so two was a surprise."It's a rule," Ferentz said. "What they called on Brandon was a high-low. If it in fact happened, it's a penalty. Brandon didn't think he did it."- Marc MorehouseVegas, babyWhen Ferentz called for Iowa punter Ryan Donahue, whose day included a 25-yard shank and a 64-yard boomer, to take a safety with 28 seconds left, the decision reverberated all the way to Las Vegas.Iowa held a 17-3 lead and had the 13.5-point spread set by Vegas betting lines covered. The safety helped the Cyclones cover and paid off those who thought the 13.5-point spread was too high.Ferentz shrugged it off. A lot of bettors probably had a different kind of reaction. Maybe one that required a defibrillator."That's somebody else's problem, farthest thing from my mind," Ferentz said. "We were just trying to get the win and do it in the smartest possible fashion." - Marc MorehouseEd on the spotWhen Ferentz made the decision to sub in Jake Christensen for Ricky Stanzi late in the third quarter, things moved fast. Maybe too fast.Christensen went for warm-up tosses and couldn't find a receiver who wasn't in an offensive huddle. So, former Hawkeyes Ed Hinkel came to the rescue.Hinkel, a four-year letterwinner (2002-05), had 135 receptions for 1,588 yards and 15 TDs in his career. He was the honorary captain last week when Florida International visited Kinnick. He's also an assistant football coach under Marv Cook at Iowa City Regina."There was no one to catch and Hinkel said, I'll catch ya," Christensen said. "I said, all right, put a uniform on." - Marc MorehouseTurf talkCyclone players made no excuses because of a wet and muddy field.Rain soaked the Kinnick Stadium turf all day Friday and Saturday morning. Light rain fell during the first quarter, but rest of the afternoon was clear.Crews worked on the field before pre-game warm-ups. It was particularly bad on the southeast corner of the field inside the 20....
