Strong, deep MVC presents challenges Found: 6 Days 21 Hours 5 Minutes ago The Gazette - CEDAR RAPIDS and#8212; When Bob Forsyth accepted the head football coaching position at Linn-Mar in February, he said he came into the situation "with my eyes wide open."The situation at Linn-Mar has been a tough one the last several years, and the Lions open tonight against Cedar Rapids Kennedy at Kingston Stadium with a 22-game losing streak. Forsyth, in Linn County after five years at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, has the unenviable task of trying to turn Linn-Mar's fortunes around while performing in the Mississippi Valley Conference, arguably the state's toughest league.Forsyth is a 1980 graduate of Iowa City High and spent some time as an assistant coach there. He's familiar with the MVC."I coached in the Valley awhile ago, and it's such a great league and such a competitive league with lots of great coaches and players," Forsyth said. "I can't say enough about it."The MVC might be as strong from top to bottom this year as any time in the recent past. No. 3 Cedar Rapids Washington, No. 5 Iowa City High, No. 7 Cedar Falls and No. 8 Cedar Rapids Xavier made The Gazette's preseason Class 4A rankings. A couple of other teams were highly considered.Dubuque Hempstead, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Dubuque Wahlert should offer challenges to the expected front-runners. Waterloo West returns many talented individuals, including quarterback Ryan Edwards. The most talked-about team has been Washington, which has the MVC's top returning running back in junior Andre Dawson, the top receiver in senior Keenan Davis and the No. 2 quarterback in senior Wyatt Suess. The schedule makers weren't kind to the Warriors, however. They open tonight at the UNI-Dome against Cedar Falls, host City High in a Thursday night game in Week 2, and travel to Prairie in Week 3.Then again, there are no easy schedules in the MVC."We appreciate the preseason accolades and all those sorts of things, and that's great," Washington Coach Tony Lombardi said. "It's a great tribute to these kids and what they did a year ago. But the reality of the situation is that none of that means a hill of beans. The people that we have on that schedule early are all very, very capable football teams."The season is not decided the first couple weeks of September. I'm not going to worry about it too much. We're going to see what that tells us about our ballclub and we'll make adjustments and go from there."The adjustments are difficult because of the "great" coaches and players referred to by Forsyth. Many coaches, such as Kennedy's Tim Lewis, have moved to the spread offense and Lewis also uses an unconventional 3-5 defense. New Iowa City West Coach Brian Sauser will use a spread offense.Outstanding athletes can be found anywhere in the state. Washington's Davis has accepted a scholarship offer from Iowa, the Hawkeyes have offered Dawson, and Suess is expected to receive offers as the season progresses.Dubuque Hempstead's Josh Lenz has accepted a scholarship from Gene Chizik at Iowa State, Cedar Falls tight end Darion Howard has five offers, including one from Iowa State, and City High junior A.J. Derby has offers from Iowa, Cincinnati and Wisconsin.City High Coach Dan Sabers is beginning his eighth season as head coach and spent many years on the sidelines as an assistant to Larry Brown before that. City High has been one of the MVC's most dominant teams since the mid-1980s and Sabers has seen great players come and move on to college."Look at all the D-I players in this league and#8212; again," Sabers said. "Look at Eric May at Wahlert. He decided to go with basketball but everyone knows what kind of performer he is" on the football field.May has accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Iowa.Xavier is the second smallest enrollment school in the league (ahead of only Wahlert) but is the last to win a state football championship (2006). The Saints went through the 2006 MVC slate undefeated and came back with seven wins last season. The Saints' last two sophomore teams were a combined 16-2.Coach Duane Schulte knows his players are in for a fight every time they take the field, including tonight when they host Jefferson."Any night, any team can knock you off," Schulte said.Forsyth is eager to get a taste of life in the Valley."We're going to have to work very hard as a staff to keep up," he said. "I couldn't feel better about the competition level. I can't wait to see how things unfold."n Contact the writer: (319) 368-8841 or jeff.dahn@gazcomm.com...
