REVIEW: Second City relies on second-rate humor
Found: 1 Day 16 Hours 56 Minutes ago
The Gazette - Let the debates begin. In one corner is The Second City comedy troupe's conservative "One Nation, Under Blog," which played The Englert last January. In the other corner is the touring troupe's liberal new offering, "Deface the Nation," which opened at The Englert on Thursday night and plays through Sunday. The conservative candidate wins my vote. And "conservative" is a relative term with these sketch comedy masters rooted in Chicago. But I don't remember the January show being so liberally peppered with profanity. The gloves came off Thursday and the F-word went flying through the air repeatedly, pulling down the show's intelligence quotient. These first-rate improv actor/comedians don't have to stoop to such plebeian ways to get a laugh.I would say they didn't give their audience enough credit for being above such lowbrow tactics. But when the troupe asked the audience for words to incorporate into improv scenes, the replies ranged from "sphincter" to "sweet tuna juice." And even though the ensuing sketches were fairly funny, I don't care to ever see another redneck hubby drinking his sweet tuna juice or a grossed-out couple trying to raise a butt baby. The eeuwww factor is just too much. And speaking of too much, the scene where Barack Obama panders to the country's ethnic melting pot was funny the first time. Not the subsequent times. And I just didn't get what was happening in the John McCain scene, where the six actors slowly melted into their chairs. Maybe I missed the day he slid out of his chair on camera. Regardless, it was neither flattering nor especially funny. And that pretty much sums up the show, which lasted two hours and 40 minutes.Potshots were lobbed at politically divisive subjects: gays, the war on terror, environmentalists, No Child Left Behind, reproductive rights, white guys, ethnic groups, etc. One of the best bits fused pop culture with yoga positions. Think downward-facing dog morphing into Snoop Dogg.Improvisation is where Second City really shines. Two actors in trench coats and dark glasses played a lively game of "Six Degrees of Separation," taking a phrase, changing it slightly, until the whole stream-of-consciousness came back to the starting point. Occasionally, they cracked each other up, which is always fun for an audience to see.The best of the improv was a political debate in the form of charades, where the two candidates had to figure out their platform based on words the audience provided, acted out by the other comedians. Sound easy? Not when the words are "ambiguous," "pupa" and "fustigates." But somehow they did it. And the process was hilarious. The third and final part of the show also used words tossed out by the audience. Each actor took a turn pairing two words, which at least two other actors had to use to create a scene. Another actor could yell "freeze" and join in or replace one of the others, to keep the action moving. "Titular moose hunting" provided ample fodder for fun in a slightly blue vein. These are sharp. fluid performers who should stop defacing their talent. "Deface the Nation" will be performed at 8 p.m. tonight, Saturday and Sunday at The Englert, 221 E. Washington St., Iowa City. Tickets are $22 and $27 through (319) 688-2653 or www.englert.org...
