Ports in the storm
Found: Minutes ago
The Gazette - CEDAR RAPIDS and#8212; The Rev. Harlan Gillespie didn't think twice before opening the doors of St. Paul's United Methodist Church to the congregations of Mount Zion and Fellowship Missionary Baptist churches when last month's flood left them without church buildings in which to worship.FAITH and VALUES "This is what Christians are supposed to do," said Gillespie, pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1340 Third Ave. SE. "This is that 'hospitality' part that we talk about."When the Cedar River hit a historic crest of 31.12 feet on June 13, congregations from 30 churches were left without a physical structure to turn to. Leaders in churches and other organizations physically untouched by the flood stepped forward immediately and offered worship and office space, support and other services."I just think the graciousness of people offering help has been unbelievable," said the Rev. Glenn Hunt, pastor of Eden United Church of Christ, 351 Eighth Ave. SW, one of the displaced churches.Eden's congregation first worshipped with its "sister" congregation, Hope United Church of Christ in Hiawatha, but has since been offered space at Cedar Memorial's Westside Chapel, 1221 First Ave. SW.Rabbi Aaron Sherman began looking for displaced congregations before the river crested. Temple Judah, the synagogue he oversees at 3221 Lindsay Lane SE, is available every Sunday for services, he said."I want people to know this is an option," he said the day after the river's crest. "There's a lot of space there."Even with three congregations meeting sometimes simultaneously at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, each congregation has its own space and#8212; something Gillespie said is important."I think it's important that congregations that are displaced are able to worship with their own congregation, they need to be able to maintain their own identity," he said. "I think it's important that a displaced congregation be able to worship as a community."That doesn't mean, though, that the congregations don't run into each other. A typical Sunday morning at St. Paul's will have the St. Paul's congregation's Communion service in the chapel at 8:15; a traditional St. Paul's service in the sanctuary and Sunday school classes for Mount Zion at 9; St. Paul's Sunday school at 10:20; St. Paul's traditional service in the chapel and Mount Zion's service in the sanctuary at 10:30; and St. Paul's contemporary service in the social hall and Fellowship Missionary Baptist's service in the chapel at 11:30."All of these people are running into each other in the hallways, talking and laughing," Gillespie said. "All of this is keeping the building very busy."The congregation at Salem United Methodist Church, 225 First Ave. SW, was displaced in the early stages of the flood and at first worshipped at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, 2424 42nd St. NE. Since that time, however, the congregation has worked out an agreement with the Echo Hill Presbyterian congregation to use the vacant Kenwood Park Presbyterian building at 327 35th St. NE. Salem's congregation can use the building rent-free for up to a year but pays its own utility bills, said Richard Pankey, the congregation's finance chairman."We have the ability to get by for a while, except the building (at Kenwood Park) is still for sale," Pankey said. "It's temporary at best, but it's a good port in the storm."...
