Youngville Cafe celebrates Apple Daze Found: 2 Weeks 5 Days 12 Hours 34 Minutes ago The Gazette - NEWHALL and#8212; Of course, they served pie Sunday afternoon at the Youngville Cafe."That's what it was noted for back when," said Joyce Wheeler.Wheeler, 76, of Watkins, and other members of the Youngville Highway History Association waited on a steady stream of customers during Youngville's Apple Daze. Besides pie, the event at the 1931 landmark included a performance by the Newhall Community Band and a visit by members of the Hawk A Model A Restorers Club of Cedar Rapids in their vehicles of appropriate Lincoln Highway vintage. There were also apples."It was an excellent year for apples," said Mike LaPage, manning the booth for the Apple Cart Orchard of Vinton. "The trees are producing overtime."The summer "was perfect for growing apples," said LaPage, of LaPorte City. "Cool summer nights, and just enough sun to redden them up." As usual, Richard Grovert was behind the counter in the cafe."I'm here every time we're open," he said. Grovert, 75, of Newhall, remembers when the crossroads cafe-gas-station-cabin camp at the junction of Highways 30 and 218 was a going concern. Grovert's grandfather Joe Young built the cafe for his daughter Lizzie Wheeler."He built this so she'd have an income," he said.Lizzie and her daughter Hazel established the cafe's reputation for fine pie and other home-style road food."This was going good" when Grovert was a child, he said. "It was always Skelly gas, and (a) Greyhound (stop)."Like most other Lincoln Highway businesses, the cafe fell on hard times after construction of Interstate 80 shifted traffic from the old route. By then operated by another owner, the cafe closed in 1967, became a private residence for several years, then was abandoned. The Youngville Highway History Association was formed in 1995 to restore the cafe. The idea was to finish the project in time for Iowa's sesquicentennial in 1996, but it wasn't reopened until 2002. "We're just kind of a small group," said Mike Kelly of Vinton, a member of the association's board. "We're always looking for volunteers."Kelly said the association has about 30 dues-paying members, but only about a dozen are active. Their work was appreciated Sunday."This is great," said visitor Kevin Navin of Cedar Rapids. "It's just like walking back into small-town Iowa. Everything's fresh, homemade."The cafe's recipes "are just a collection from all over," said Wheeler. Before getting involved with the project, "I didn't hardly ever bake pies. I just started because that was it, back then."The Youngville Cafe is open for lunch, and pie, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Oct. 16. A farmers market is held every Friday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. through Oct. 17.For more information: www.youngvillecafe.com...

Ex-Kohawk Jackson makes mark with Bills Found: 2 Weeks 6 Days 14 Hours 50 Minutes ago The Gazette - Former Coe College running back Fred Jackson has given the Buffalo Bills a powerful alternative at running back this season.Jackson caught seven passes for 83 yards in a 20-16 win against Jacksonville last week. He and starting running back Marshawn Lynch have helped propel the Bills into a surprising 2-0 record with both wins coming against 2007 playoff teams."We look at Fred as just a very valuable 1-2 punch, he and Marshawn," Bills Coach Dick Jauron told the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle last week. "We think the world of him. We know he's got talents in a lot of different areas. He makes plays. He's got a great feel for the game, a tough guy. He's just a really good football player."Jackson has rushed for 48 yards on 16 carries this year. His versatility has given the Bills another weapon in a surprising offensive arsenal."Fred Jackson, he's a playmaker and you just have to get the ball to him and allow him to make guys miss," Bills quarterback Trent Edwards told the newspaper. "He did a great job for me. I threw the ball maybe five yards past the line of scrimmage and he puts another 30 yards on the play. That's a quarterback's dream right there."Jackson graduated from Coe in 2003, then played two seasons for the Sioux City Bandits of the United Indoor Football League. He signed with the Bills' practice team in 2006. Last year, he got his shot on the active roster, running for 300 yards on 58 carries and catching 22 passes for 190 yards in eight games. He started against Cincinnati."I look at every opportunity I get that it may very well be my last," Jackson told the newspaper. "We knew it was going to be hot and we wanted to rotate and keep Marshawn fresh."He (Edwards) told me on some of the plays, 'I need you to get out for me right here because I may be coming to you,'" Jackson said. "They play a lot of man coverage and we knew we could take advantage of them playing us with linebackers. "Local connectionFive notable news notes about players with local ties:@Body copy ragged right bullets:l Cedar Rapids native Kurt Warner was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after posting a perfect passer rating of 158.3 in Arizona's win over Miami. He completed 19 of 24 passes for 361 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. It was Warner's third perfect passer rating day, tying Peyton Manning for the most in NFL history.l Former Iowa and current Denver Broncos center Casey Wiegmann continued his streak for consecutive games started to 113, the longest among centers and third among offensive linemen. Wiegmann, a Parkersburg native, has played every snap for the Chiefs from the second game of the 2001 season through his first two games of the 2008 season with Denver. l Former Iowa and current Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders will miss 4-to-6 weeks after surgery for a high-ankle sprain. He was the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.l Former Iowa linebacker Abdul Hodge, who was cut by the Green Bay Packers in training camp, was signed to the Cincinnati Bengals' practice squad Tuesday.l Former Iowa receiver C.J. Jones was cut after one game by the New England Patriots.Viking troublesThe Minnesota Vikings nearly pulled the trigger on a pair of quarterback trades involving Iowans in the last 13 months, but neither panned out. Minnesota considered trading for Warner during the 2007 preseason but was rebuffed. This off-season, the Vikings tried to pick up Houston backup quarterback (Maquoketa and Iowa State alum) Sage Rosenfels before the April draft. The Texans wanted a second-round pick; the Vikings offered a third. Neither side budged, and the Vikings signed Gus Frerotte instead. The Vikings benched starter Tarvaris Jackson this week and will start Frerotte for the rest of the season.TV historyThe NFL continued its television dominance throughout the country, topping the Nielsen Rating charts in 28 of its 29 markets opening week. The only market not participating was New Orleans, which was not metered because of Hurricane Gustav.During the 2007-08 television season, the NFL claimed the top four most-viewed programs and six of the top 10. The Super Bowl averaged 97.5 million viewers, followed by the NFL championship (53.9 million) and the AFC championship (44.8 million). The NFL dwarfed the 2008 Summer Olympics in a television comparison. The NFL had eight games average more than 30 million viewers, and the Olympics averaged 30 million viewers five nights. Of the 13 televised events, the Olympics' opening ceremonies slipped in at No. 5, and its most-viewed competition night and#8212; Aug. 12 and#8212; finished seventh.Even regular-season games displayed the NFL television powerhouse.Seven of the top eight most-watched shows were NFL games. Only the season premiere of "CSI" at No. 5 prevented an NFL monopoly.n Contact the writer (319) 339-3169 or scott.dochterman@gazcomm.com...
