Ancient adventure
Found: 2 Months 2 Weeks 2 Days 8 Hours 31 Minutes ago
The Gazette - cruise turned out to be the ideal way to combine beautiful scenery, great food onboard and on shore, and an interest in ancient history. The 12-day cruise started May 20 in Istanbul, Turkey, founded about 676 B.C., and ended in Athens, Greece, a city that has been continuously inhabited for more than 3,000 years. In between were stops at Kusadasi, Turkey, six Greek islands, Albania and Croatia. These sites offer tremendous diversity in people, in cultures, in languages, in architecture, reflecting their turbulent political histories. It also became clear how often natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes and floods altered the course of history. I'm still absorbing what I learned about the area that laid the foundations of western civilization, not only from my own observations and from the excellent guides leading the shore tours, but from daily written briefings supplied by staff of the Oceania Cruise Line en route. And I've stored up lots of images to supplement the words. Here are a few samples.A few steps under the central dome of Istanbul's Blue Mosque is all it takes to understand why it's called that: More than 20,000 ceramic tiles in shades of cobalt blue are highlighted by the sun streaming through 260 windows. The effect is stunning. As cars and buses moved by on the multilane street in Istanbul, a man carefully balanced a heaped basket of unwrapped loaves of bread on his head as he stood on the traffic island ready for customers. Another man held a basket of plums while a driver made a purchase as he waited for the traffic light to change. The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul - 4,000 shops along 58 streets under one roof - was a confusing mix of color and sound as shopkeepers urged us into their shops. If you didn't bargain you paid too much.Ephesus, one of Turkey's most important archeological sites, was memorable in many ways including red poppies blooming everywhere among the ruins. The grass field where the first Olympics were held in 776 B.C. was suddenly full of men and women sprinting to the end and back. The first view of Sarande in Albania was impressive: high rise buildings. But as the ship got closer we realized that many of them were concrete shells of old unfinished buildings that we could see through. One of the most personally satisfying was the view of Athens from the Acropolis as I stood in front of the Parthenon, a model for buildings all over the world. The places visited offer tremendous diversity in people, in cultures, in languages, in architecture, reflecting their turbulent political histories. It also became clear how often natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes and floods altered the course of history....
