Johnson County Vietnam vets install memorial
Found: 2 Weeks 5 Days 17 Hours 43 Minutes ago
The Gazette - Mike Bombei would prefer it if you called him by his club name -- Bomb. The Vietnam veteran wears a black eyepatch on his right eye and has a wild, hoary beard. Tattoos cover his arms with a twisting pile of skulls, faces, eagles and American flags. When he saw the memorial installed Tuesday morning, tears welled up in his good eye.Bombei, 59, of Brooklyn was one of about 10 members of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club, Chapter D, who stood watching as workers from from Watts Vault and Monument Co. installed a new Johnson County Vietnam Veterans memorial in front of the county courthouse. The first monument of its kind in Johnson County, it is intended to honor the more than 1,500 Johnson County residents who served during the Vietnam War, and the 7 or 8 Johnson County residents who died in the conflict.Bombei and 5 members woke up early and rode their motorcycles to Montezuma to provide an escort for the monument on its way to Iowa City."For me to be able to ride in that escort this morning was an honor," said Bombei, originally drafted into the war while living in Iowa City. "It basically is a memorial dedicated to all the people in that conflict, and this is for a lot of them that couldnt be here today."The monument, designed by Don Welch, 70, of Kalona, stands about 6 feet tall and is made of polished black granite. On it, covering a silhouette of North and South Vietnam, is a message honoring the men and women who served the nation in the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1975. Under this, reads the epigraph:ALL GAVE SOMESOME GAVE ALL...

Dorman: A few questions could thwart consultant fleecing of C.R.
Found: 3 Weeks 4 Days 23 Hours 22 Minutes ago
The Gazette - More than a few jaws dropped this week as we read the tale of the consultant who knew too little while being paid too much. The consultant hired by the city of Cedar Rapids to give advice on flood damage and mitigation had to admit that his experience in these matters is a little thin. His wallet, however, is now fat, thanks to his $475 per-hour paycheck. Now, I could pile on the city for being clueless, but why bother? I'd rather be helpful, as is my true nature. So I've developed a questionnaire the city can give to future would-be consultants to help make sure we don't get fleeced again. No need to thank me, really.FLOOD CONSULTANT QUESTIONNAIRE1. Use a fair, competitive bidding process to find a competent company that can do the job at a reasonable price.b. Call in air strikes. c. I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow the houses down.d. Wait for cockroaches to carry them away.4. In your opinion, what critical steps should be taken to protect the city from future flooding?a. Incorporate new levees, flood walls and expanded green space into a carefully crafted mitigation plan.b. Use super giant helicopters to lift the entire city onto massive titanium stilts.c. Put all potential options on a giant dart board, get a blindfold and throw.d. Hand out maracas and lead a mandatory communitywide flood protection dance.5. Based on your expertise, how much compensation will you be requesting?a. I would only accept a fee based on results and benefits the city derives from my work.b. I shall receive a bushel of gold coinage each day as tribute, or I will summon the heavens to smite you. c. Hey, you can't put a price tag on protection, but several hundred dollars per hour is a good start. d. How much have you got?6. Citizens have expressed concerns about the use of consultants. What would you tell them?a. I understand their skepticism, but I will do everything I can to earn their trust and justify my expense.b. Sorry, I had my head so deep in the public trough that I didn't hear the question. c. Who cares? As long as I get paid....
