The Gazette - ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands and#8212; Wendy Ausdemore's 3-pointer with five seconds left sent the game to overtime, but South Florida prevailed in the extra period last night for an 82-79 victory over Iowa in the Paradise Jam.It doesn't get any easier for the Hawks (4-2), who play third-ranked California today at 7:35 p.m. (Iowa time).Ausdemore posted a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds and became the third player on this team to reach the 1,000-point club. She joins Kristi Smith and Megan Skouby in reaching the milestone.Turnovers plagued the Hawkeyes. They committed 27 turnovers, and South Florida scored 26 points off them. Also, Smith fouled out with 8:36 left in regulation."This was a disappointing loss," Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder said. "We did a good job rebounding, but we didn't possess the basketball. It was unfortunate having Kristi foul out. We felt like we needed to have her in there at that point of the game."Skouby scored 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting, and Smith scored 12 points. JoAnn Hamlin led the Hawkeyes with 14 rebounds, and Ausdemore distributed four assists.South Florida led 44-40 at halftime, getting a big boost from Shantia Grace with 21 points. She finished with a game-high 27 points. Now the Hawks try to shake off an overtime loss and get ready for Cal."California is a very good basketball team, and we will have to be at our best tomorrow night," Bluder said....

Hawkeyes crank up defense, down Texas Tech, 56-48
Found: 1 Week 4 Hours 3 Minutes ago
The Gazette - ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands and#8212; It didn't come easy, but the Iowa women's basketball team did what it had to do last night. The Hawkeyes, hampered by foul trouble to their post players, had enough to hold off Texas Tech, 56-48, in their opening-round game at the Paradise Jam, handing the Red Raiders their first loss in five games.Senior forward Wendy Ausdemore had her best scoring game this season. She scored 17 points and pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds. Ausdemore is four points short of 1,000 for her career."This was a really good win for us against a team from the Big 12 Conference," Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder said. "Our zone defense was very good today. I was happy to see Wendy Ausdemore come out and contribute so much." Iowa (4-1), used a 15-1 run early in the second half to build a comfortable lead, but had to hold on after losing post players Megan Skouby and JoAnn Hamlin to fouls late in the game. With senior Nicole VanderPol sitting out with a leg injury, the Hawkeyes turned to sophomore Kelsey Cermak, who saw her first action of the season. Cermak, who is still battling a back injury, didn't score, but played well defensively in her three minutes of play.Texas Tech (4-1) had trouble denting Iowa's defense. The Red Raiders shot just 15 of 60 from the floor, including 3 of 20 from 3-point range."Obviously Texas Tech didn't shoot the ball well," Bluder said. "I hope part of it was our defense. I think we shook them early." The Hawkeyes led 25-23 at halftime and fell behind 28-25 early in the second half. Iowa eventually tied the game at 29-29 on a pair of Kristi Smith free throws, then took control. Smith nailed a 3-point basket, reserve Kelly Krei came through with a short jumper and Ausdemore poured in a 3-pointer to put the Hawks up 37-29.Tech made a free throw, but the Hawks got lay-ins from Smith and Ausdemore and a jumper from Ausdemore to go up 43-30 with 11:18 remaining. The Red Raiders cut the lead to 43-35 on a follow shot from Kierra Mallard with 9:48 remaining, but Iowa pieced together a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to regain control. The Hawkeyes built the lead to 56-39 with 3:59 remaining, but Skouby and Hamlin both fouled out in the final four minutes and Iowa held on despite going scoreless over the final 3:59.Smith finished with 15 points for the Hawkeyes. Skouby struggled from the field, hitting just 1 of 9 shots in 33 minutes. Hamlin played just 12 minutes because of foul trouble, and failed to score."I thought our defense got better and better as the game went on. We matched their physical play and came up huge on the defensive glass tonight," Smith said.Krei had a solid effort for the Hawkeyes off the bench. She scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in 32 minutes."Kelly did a super job off the bench, playing significant minutes with JoAnn in foul trouble most of the game," Bluder said.Mallard led the Red Raiders with 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Dominic Seals added 10 points.Iowa plays again today in the round-robin tournament, meeting South Florida at 5 p.m."South Florida is a team very, very similar to Texas Tech, except their guards shoot the ball a little better," Bluder said....
