Wolfpack on the hunt again Found: 5 Days 4 Hours 38 Minutes ago The Gazette - CEDAR RAPIDS and#8212; New crew. Same old Wolfpack.Top-ranked Western Christian posted a staggering .414 kill efficiency and dusted No. 15 Unity Christian for the sixth time this season, 25-8, 25-23, 25-11, in a Class 2A quarterfinal at the state volleyball tournament last night at the U.S. Cellular Center.Brittany Landegent is the only returning starter from a unit that won the last two 2A titles. But the transition has been relatively smooth. The Wolfpack (45-4) are a power again; all four losses were to 4A competition.Like the slogan on Western's warm-up T-shirts reads: "Tradition never graduates.""We feel like there's pressure on us to stand up to our tradition, but once you get on the floor, it doesn't take long to settle down," Landegent said.Western, winner of six of the last seven 2A crowns, looked right at home and handled its Sioux County rival once again. The only thing that went wrong was an injury to libero Jenessa Schutte, who appeared to sprain an ankle late in the third game."If she can't play (in tonight's semifinal against Aplington-Parkersburg), it would be a tough blow," said Western Coach Tammi Veerbeek. "She's the backbone of our defense."Aplington-Parkersburg (25-13) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat No. 5 Carroll Kuemper in five games last night.Five of Western's six wins over Unity (29-14) were sweeps. Other than the second game, this one was a mismatch."We were pretty confident that we could control them if we stayed in system," Veerbeek said.Landegent provided more value than her uniform numeral (No. 0) would indicate. She pounded 12 kills in 17 attacks.Western had 42 kills and#8212; and only six errors and#8212; in 87 hits.Unity tested the Wolfpack in the second game but tossed a few grenades at their feet at the end.The Knights went on an 11-1 run to take a 15-10 lead and were tied at 21-21 before short-circuiting. Western's final three points came on Unity errors and#8212; a spike into the net, a serve into the net and a serve that sailed long at game point.APLINGTON-PARKERSBURG 3, CARROLL KUEMPER 2 and#8212; Chelsea Poppens provided a lift. In more ways than one.Poppens registered 30 kills and 14 blocks to help the Falcons rally from a two-game deficit to trip the Knights, 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-10.Six-foot-3 and solid, Poppens had a habit of picking up her teammates off the ground after a critical point."Sometimes I get a little excited and pick people up once in a while," said Poppens, who has committed to play basketball at Iowa State.Kuemper (32-3) had everything going its way through the first two games, then the momentum shifted on a dime."We just started getting to the ball better," Poppens said. "Even when we were down 2-0, I knew we were not going to lose."Kuemper rallied from a 19-15 deficit to tie Game 4 at 19-all, but the Falcons scored six of the next seven points and#8212; including two blocks and a kill by Poppens and#8212; to take the game. A-P shot to an 8-1 lead in Game 5, and coasted.DIKE-NEW HARTFORD 3, WATERLOO COLUMBUS 0 and#8212; The second-ranked Wolverines needed only 57 minutes to advance, 25-13, 25-11, 25-20."We kept up our enthusiasm and our intensity and everybody did their part," said all-stater Hannah Willms, who led DNH (36-4) with 11 kills. The Wolverines will face No. 3 IKM-Manning (40-0) in a semifinal at 6 p.m. today.Heather Rekers added nine kills, Jennah Smith eight for DNH.Columbus closed at 28-17.n Contact the writer: (319) 368-8857 or jeff.linder@gazcomm.com...
