2 UNI players dismissed from team

The Gazette - CEDAR FALLS and#8212; Johnny Gray and Victor Williams, arrested Friday on marijuana charges, have been dismissed from the University of Northern Iowa football team, Coach Mark Farley announced Monday."I've always preached to our team that the program comes first, and nobody is bigger than the program," Farley said. "And that will remain the same as long as I'm here."Gray, 22, an FCS All-American from Deerfield Beach, Fla., was charged Friday with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and with a violation of the Iowa Drug Tax Stamp law. Both charges are Class D felonies that can result in up to five years in prison and a fine of $750 to $7,500.Williams, 23, from Clewiston, Fla., was charged with possession of marijuana, a serous misdemeanor that can result in one year in prison and a fine ranging from $250 to $1,500.Farley suspended both players from Saturday's game at Indiana State before making a final decision on their status with the team. He met with Gray on Sunday and dealt swift punishment."I met with Johnny Gray and immediately released him from our football team," he said.He met with Williams on Sunday and again Monday morning, trying to determine the proper punishment since Williams faces lesser charges, but decided to dismiss him as well.Troy Dannen, UNI's director of athletics, said Monday he supported Farley's decisions regarding the integrity of the program."He took a very stern and I think a very appropriate response," Dannen said.Farley declined to share any details of his meetings with Gray and Williams. He also declined to say if either player apologized."I'd rather not," he said. "Those are personal things."Farley said both players, who are seniors, are scheduled to graduate this December. Dannen said both players will remain on scholarship for the rest of this semester.Gray, a fan favorite with electrifying ability, finishes his career with 3,686 yards on pass receptions, punt returns, kick returns and runs from scrimmage. He scored 20 touchdowns and finishes No. 2 in school history in punt returns and No. 4 all-time in receptions.Williams caught 73 passes in his career for 987 yards and nine touchdowns.Cedar Falls police and the Tri-County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant Friday morning at 515 West 18th Street in Cedar Falls, where Gray and Williams have been living. The law enforcement officers found marijuana along with items to use and sell marijuana.Northern Iowa, ranked fourth in the country, clinched at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference title on Saturday without Gray and Williams. Now the Panthers will not have two of their top weapons when the FCS playoffs start in two weeks."If you want to bet against this team, go ahead," Farley said sternly, "but I'd be very careful.
