Marquette rips UNI men Found: 5 Days 10 Hours 4 Minutes ago The Gazette - The 15th-ranked Marquette Golden Eagles scored 20 straight points in the first half last night and drubbed the University of Northern Iowa, 73-43, in the third round of the Chicago Invitational Challenge at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill.The Golden Eagles (5-0) were sitting on a 12-8 lead early in the game when they went on their 20-0 surge over a 7-minute span to take control of the game. The Panthers (3-2) will face Auburn (3-2) in the final round of the tournament today at 4:30 p.m.Wesley Matthews led Marquette with 17 points, Lazar Hayward scored 15 and Jerel McNeal added 13.Kwadzo Ahelegbe was the only UNI player to reach double figures with 11 points. Jordan Eglseder was next for the Panthers with eight points.Marquette led 37-18 at halftime. The Golden Eagles opened a 32-point lead, 67-35, on a basket by Matthews.Northern Iowa shot poorly, committed a string of costly turnovers in the first half and got pounded on the backboards by Marquette, which reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last season and has a veteran team.Marquette averaged 96.5 points in its first four victories of the season, so the Panthers held the Golden Eagles to 23 points under their average. It didn't matter, because the Panthers had trouble converting on the offensive end and were never really in the game.Anthony James, a 6-foot freshman from St. Louis, made his first appearance of the season in the second half for UNI and thus will not be red-shirted this year. James is a quick guard with strong defensive skills, something that was lacking against Marquette last night. The Panthers shot 35 percent from the floor and were dreadful on 3-pointers, hitting only 3 of 21 for 14.3 percent. Marquette made 12 3-pointers and beat UNI on the backboards, 42-29.Adam Koch scored six points for the Panthers, followed by Johnny Moran (5), Kerwin Dunham (4), Ali Farokhmanesh (3), Lucas O'Rear (3), James (2) and Jon Montgomery (1). Farkhmanesh played with a broken nose, suffered earlier this season against Illinois-Chicago but diagnosed this week. He played with a protective device on his nose.Dominic James scored eight points for Marquette and David Cubillan scored seven.Northern Iowa assistant coach Kyle Green tore his Achilles tendon in practice Thursday and was on crutches at last night's game.Auburn lost to Dayton, 60-59, in overtime Friday....
