Presbyterian group helps restore Cedar Rapids homes
Found: 2 Days 25 Minutes ago
The Gazette - CEDAR RAPIDS and#8212; Six flood-damaged Cedar Rapids houses took big steps last week toward becoming homes again, thanks in large part to a group of Presbyterians from Michigan. Not that they're looking for credit."I don't know that it's all that peculiar among Methodists, Catholics, and Lutherans," said Rick Peters. "They have come from all over the country."Peters, 65, pastor of Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church of Livonia, Mich., and 28 members of his church spent the week in Cedar Rapids on a mission arranged by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, a program of the national Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)Presbyterian Disaster Assistance volunteers must arrange to take time off from work and pay their own expenses and#8212; about $200 per person this trip. The group bunked at Christ Presbyterian Church, 2000 First Ave. NW.Most of the Rosedale Gardens group are by now disaster-response veterans. Peters has been a Presbyterian Disaster volunteer since the program's inception about 20 years ago. Others have been aboard since at least since soon after Hurricane Katrina in 2003."They called me, and I've been coming ever since," said Larry Blanchard. "They get so much done."Blanchard, 60, of Gregory, Mich., isn't a member of Peters' congregation, but he has credentials: a residential contractor by profession, he can provide valuable advice."We come here to work," said Blanchard, who's made Presbyterian Disaster trips to Houma, La., and Bilxoi, Miss. "I didn't want to serve water."On Thursday, Blanchard and Peters and their crew and#8212; the church's volunteers were split into six teams and#8212; were at the southwest Cedar Rapids home at 902 Seventh Street SW owned by Shirley Phillips where they'd spent the week. They started by finishing the installation of the home's drywall, then proceeded to painting and finishing work."I just learned to paint everything, and I'm going to use that on my rooms when I go back," said Janine Uhelski of Farmington, Mich., on her third Presbyterian Disaster trip.An at-home mother, Uhelski, 49, didn't have to worry about work, but she cooked and refrigerated a few meals for her husband and son, 13, and daughter, 11."It's good for them, having them learn responsibility," she said.Dave Conrad said Cedar Rapids seems better organized than some disaster areas he's visited. The East Central Iowa Volunteer Reception Center dispatched the Presbyterian Disaster teams to their local work sites."Flexibility is key in a disaster zone," said Conrad, 48, of Livonia.Responding to disaster is also Conrad's job and#8212; he's laid off from his job with a disaster recovery service and#8212; but he said the volunteer group's work is more rewarding."It's a chance to serve the Lord, and some of the neediest of His people," he said. "Because these people have lost everything.""Whatever kind of turmoil you've got going on in your own life pales in comparison," said John Niemisto, 51, of Livonia. "So you carry that around."Teams from Rosedale Gardens leave something at each home they work in: A quilt sewn by church women and a plaque commemorating their stay.Still, "with us all doing this stuff together, we take away more than what we give," said Curt Beadle, 53, of Livonia....
