Fewer flood victims living in FEMA mobile homes
Found: 4 Days 12 Hours 26 Minutes ago
The Gazette - CEDAR RAPIDS and#8212; The Federal Emergency Management Agency has 548 mobile homes in Iowa providing temporary housing to disaster victims, the vast majority of them and#8212; 455 and#8212; in Eastern Iowa. That's down from the 747 mobile homes that were in Iowa in mid-October."Temporary housing is a dynamic activity," FEMA spokesman Russ Edmonston wrote in an e-mail. "There are new moving in, old moving out."To handle the fluid demand, FEMA stores several surplus units at parks around the region."We are deactivating excess units but will maintain enough to meet any need," Edmonston said. "The original assessment was a little extra."A spare home at Marion Village was needed, for example, after a fire damaged a mobile home the night of Oct. 12. FEMA workers were on the scene before firefighters left, Edmonston said."They took the folks over to the unoccupied home, got the bedding and made the beds for them," he said. "They bought them dinner and by 11:30 they were rehoused."Although FEMA's Westdale Mall recovery center closed in mid-October, FEMA staffers remain in Iowa to handle similar emergencies. A FEMA caseworker also meets at least monthly with each tenant to ensure they're making the progress toward a move-out after 18 rent-free months.A few families moved out over concerns about formaldehyde levels in the homes. FEMA is retesting homes for that chemical, if tenants request, for free....
