"We just plug along."Like it or not, Coach, the Women of Troy have established themselves as favorites at the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament Saturday at Waterloo West. The MVC meet is one of five area conference tournaments this week. The Wamac will begin its 16-team slugfest Thursday at Marion and complete it Saturday at Mount Vernon and Maquoketa. The Tri-Rivers tournament is Saturday at Monticello; the Northeast Iowa Conference tournament is Saturday at Waukon. The first Cedar Valley Conference tournament concludes Thursday at a site to be determined. The MVC and Wamac events will be free-for-alls.West (28-2) has won 12 straight matches, including six on its way to the Westside Invitational title Saturday at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Kennedy is a lights-out team. Dubuque Hempstead, Washington, City High, Prairie ... "The list goes on and on. Eight MVC teams are ranked, including No. 5 Kennedy (26-6), No. 6 Dubuque Hempstead (25-3), No. 7 Cedar Rapids Prairie (24-3) and No. 10 Iowa City High (19-12)."Who knows who's going to win it? It could be one of six different teams," said Kennedy junior Haley Brightwell. "Hopefully it will be us. We'll see."The Wamac expanded from 12 teams to 16 this year, adding quality as well as depth.Mount Vernon (27-1) is top-rated in 3A and ranked 34th nationally, but was exposed somewhat in its semifinal loss to Kennedy at Westside."We need to recognize that if you don't play your best, somebody's going to beat you, and I think we learned that Saturday," said Mustangs Coach Shirley Ryan."I think we're going to be fine. If you're going to have a loss, better here than next weekend."The Mustangs will have plenty of challengers, particularly once bracket play begins. Marion (34-5) is ranked second in 3A. West Delaware (27-6) is fifth and took a game from the Mustangs in the Westside quarterfinals.Eight teams will advance to championship bracket play Saturday at Mount Vernon. I.C. West wins Westside Found: 1 Month 1 Week 2 Days 19 Hours 46 Minutes ago The Gazette - CEDAR RAPIDS and#8212; The wardrobe for the Iowa City West volleyball team consists of white tops, green Spandex bottoms and proverbial blue collars."We aren't flashy; we just plug along," Coach Kathy Bresnahan said. The Class 4A third-ranked Women of Troy presented Bresnahan with her 500th career win Saturday, emerging from a strong, deep field to capture the Westside Invitational tournament at Jefferson High School.Nothing flashy. And nothing easy. Four of West's six matches went the maximum three games, including a 20-25, 25-15, 15-12 win over No. 5 Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the championship match."We had a lot of gut checks today," said West's Emma Krieger-Kittle. "We kept telling ourselves, 'We want it more.'"West (28-2) also went the distance in pool wins against Cedar Rapids Washington and Waterloo Columbus. West beat Washington and#8212; again in three and#8212; in the quarterfinals before sweeping Dubuque Hempstead in the semis.Even that was no piece of cake. West overcame deficits of 22-16 in the first game and 22-15 in the second game in the 25-22, 26-24 triumph.Bresnahan's career record is 500-162, including 412-141 in 17 years at West."What does this mean? It means I've had some fun kids to be around," she said. "What a way to get it, here at this tournament."Twelve of the 24 teams were ranked, and the eight quarterfinalists came into the championship bracket with a combined record of 210-28. Five of the seven championship-bracket matches went three games."It was probably as tough as the state tournament will be," Bresnahan said.Kennedy (26-6) reached the final by tripping 3A No. 1 Mount Vernon, 24-26, 25-22, 17-15, in the semifinal round. The Mustangs (27-1) held a 14-11 lead in the closing set, but Trisha Hinke had three kills in the Cougars' 6-1 run that won it."Kennedy just outplayed us at the end," said Mustangs Coach Shirley Ryan. "We haven't had this kind of competition for a couple weeks, and we were a little out of rhythm."To classify the Cougars as excited afterward would be a major understatement."That was like the biggest deal ever," said Kennedy's Haley Brightwell. "Everybody was almost in tears afterward."We still had a lot of adrenalin in the first game (against West), but we couldn't keep it up."Kennedy closed fast in Game 1 of the final, overcoming a 19-16 deficit. But West scored 11 points in a row midway through Game 2 for a 20-8 advantage, then led through most of the final set.Jessica Gehrke collected 14 kills for West. Alli O'Deen added 10, Krieger-Kittle nine. Keeley Grimm-Strand dished out 29 assists.Brightwell had nine kills for Kennedy. Kristen Hahn served five aces. More questions than answers for Cedar Rapids library Found: 2 Months 2 Weeks 21 Hours 9 Minutes ago The Gazette - Josh Marsceau recently decided to draw a portrait for his sister and her fiance. He wanted to give it a certain look, like an old-fashioned family photograph, and he needed some ideas. "The first place I go is the library," said the 29-year-old part-owner of a Cedar Rapids coffee shop.To research art projects, read about coffee, check out movies or music and#8212; he used to visit the downtown library two or three times a week.Since the flood, the thought "I'll find that at the library" has shifted to "Dang, I wish the library was still open," Marsceau said.Gutted and empty, the library at 500 First St. SE sits dormant. No firm timeline exists for its return.June flooding filled the building's first floor with 5 feet of water. The toll: 160,000 books, movies, music albums and other items were lost. Some 32,000 checked-out items and the 62,000 children's collection, which was housed on the second floor, remain. The board has estimated the downtown library may not reopen until 2011, and the big question is what must happen before it comes back. First, the board must get an estimate of the cost to restore the flooded building. An engineering firm should have that ready by the end of this month. After that, the course of action is not clear."When we put out that three-year time frame, that is just at this point conjecture, based on what we've seen in other communities," board President Susan Corrigan said. The board will have to decide whether to rebuild in the same spot or somewhere else, a decision that will take at least six to eight weeks after the engineering cost estimates are returned.Several unknowns confront the library board. The first is how much money will be available. The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Tuesday it has awarded $18.7 million to the library, but that's a preliminary number, according to the library and FEMA, and library officials give it little significance."Those figures were based on a formula used by a FEMA staff member," DeVries said. "It's just a way to get the ball rolling."Revisions of the funding request, based on estimates of actual repair costs, will come later. The second unknown is the city's flood protection plan and placement of levees, meaning library officials don't yet know whether they will be allowed to rebuild so close to the Cedar River. The city will unveil flood protection options at open houses Thursday."We don't want to assume that the flood mitigation plan will absolutely allow us to go back because we don't know that," DeVries said. A recent idea and#8212; one Corrigan is excited about and#8212; would be to combine a new library with some other facility, perhaps a community center. She floated the idea at a board meeting Thursday, but there was no discussion."The board makes that decision, but it's not as if we make that decision in a vacuum," Corrigan said.In the meantime, the library board has authorized leasing three more storefronts at Westdale Mall, where the Westside Branch Library has operated for years. The area to be leased includes the former Osco Drug store space. The details of the deal and#8212; rent will be $166,488 per year and#8212; are close to being finalized, library spokeswoman Marie DeVries said. The public libraries in Hiawatha and Marion also have been helping fill the gap.July circulation shot up 20 percent at the Hiawatha Public Library and at least 10 percent at the Marion Public Library. Cedar Rapids library staff have been helping at both libraries.Sandy Ford, who works at the United Fire Group in downtown Cedar Rapids, said she used to take the skywalk to the library over her lunch hour to check out books for her two sons."I hate that I'm not going to have that convenience any more," she said. "Now I'm going to have to run to Hiawatha."...
