According the American Judicature Society, the only place in the nation where voters opted for electing judges after using a "merit"system of appointing them is neighboring Wyandotte County.The campaign also is notable for the pitch from opponents. It's spelled out in a billboard along I-35 in Merriam: "Keep Phill Kline Off Our Court.""The people who put this on the ballot are out of the Phill Kline section of the Republican Party,"said Greg Musil, chairman of Johnson Countians for Justice, which opposes the initiative.
