Wichita Eagle - A 42-year-old man was seriously injured when he was stabbed by his 43-year-old girlfriend today, Wichita police said.Police said an argument broke out between the man and the woman at about 12:40 a.m. in the 800 block of South Erie. During the argument, the man received several cuts to his hand and chest, police said.He was taken to Wesley Medical Center and the woman was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail....

Wichita Eagle - A 14-year-old boy whose home burned down earlier this month was hospitalized Saturday after he was burned while playing with fire, a Wichita fire official said today.The incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. when the boy was at a friend's home in the 4300 block of S. Hydraulic. The teens poured alcohol on their clothing and then set their clothes on fire, said Wichita Fire Marshal Ed Bricknell.At one point, a flash fire started on one of the boy's pants, causing second-degree burns to his abdomen, chest, face and neck, Bricknell said.The boy was taken to Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus. The other teen was not injured.Bricknell said the home of the boy who was injured burned down in a fire Oct. 2. That fire, Bricknell said, was caused by a smoking accident....

Wichita Eagle - Four people were arrested Sunday after breaking into a woman's home in a case that Wichita police say was related to a drug deal that had gone bad.According to police, the 22-year-old woman was at her home in the 2000 block of South Water when she said she received a phone call about 1:30 a.m. from a man claiming he was going to shoot up her home.The woman, who was with four other people, ages 1 to 18 years old, called police.Shortly after that, two people kicked in the front door and came in, police said. They searched the house and stole some property. Police said the suspects were looking for someone over an incident related to a drug deal that had gone bad. That person was not in the home, police said.Police arrived while the suspects were still at the house. They arrested four people -- including one who fled on foot and was later caught by an officer. The suspects, three men and one woman, ranged in age from 22 to 29....

Wichita Eagle - 71 jail inmates have been in for over a yearThe Sedgwick County Jail, which was built to hold defendants awaiting trial and petty criminals serving short jail sentences, now holds 71 inmates who have been in custody for a year or longer, a recent survey found.As jail administrators try to draw on a variety of programs to keep inmate levels in check, they have concluded that the long-timers are not the types of inmates who can benefit from any of those programs."The ones that are left here are the ones, we agree, that should be in custody,"Sheriff Gary Steed said.The inmate analysis was conducted by sheriff's Maj.
