Arena planners urge more parking
Found: 3 Days 15 Hours 34 Minutes ago
Wichita Eagle - Planners recommend Sedgwick County gain control of 2,400 parking spaces within four blocks of Intrust Bank Arena -- including 753 at the state office building -- as a partial solution to arena parking.Peak parking demand -- during sellout concerts and college and pro basketball games at the arena -- would require 5,000 spaces, based on a study by Walker Parking Consultants. For more than 90 percent of events, 2,667 parking spaces would be enough; for more than half of those events, 1,333 spaces would be enough, Scott Knebel, a principal planner with the Metropolitan Area Planning Department, told commissioners at their weekly meeting with staff Tuesday.Commissioner Tim Norton said he thinks the county -- and city -- should plan for more parking in expectation of redevelopment downtown. He advocates building a parking deck similar to the one at Gander Mountain at WaterWalk."The place where I think it should go is over in front of the maintenance barn"on Waterman, Norton said. "There's 200-plus, maybe 300 parking spaces there now. There's some additional space south of that right now that could be added on to, and I'd put a deck over that whole thing. That instantly would give you between 1,200 and 1,500 parking spaces. I think that serves a lot of masters."...
