Late score drops Mustangs to 1-3 Found: 2 Weeks 8 Hours 2 Minutes ago The Salina Journal -

STILWELL -- Apparently it doesn't matter whether its postseason or regular season. When Salina Central and Blue Valley-Stilwell meet on the football field, it's going to be wild ride.
Central rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit to get the game tied in the final two minutes, only to have the Tigers respond with the game-winning score with nine seconds remaining for a 38-31 victory Friday night at Blue Valley High School Stadium.
The Mustangs and Tigers had met five times in postseason contests, with two of those going to overtime and another two decided in the closing seconds. But Friday's game was the first time the longtime Class 5A powers had met in the regular season.
"Our kids couldn't have possibly played any harder," said Central coach Mike Hall, whose team fell to 1-2. "We talked before the game that they should have to drag themselves off the field after this game, and they literally had to do that.
"We had to expend all the energy we had and just came up a little short."
The Tigers (2-1) appeared to have broken open what had been a tight contest with three third-quarter touchdowns to take a 31-14 lead, but Central clawed its way back into the game.
A 53-yard touchdown pass from Trey Dallas to Jesse Wassenberg cut the lead to 10 before the end of the third period, and Eric Berner's 20-yard field goal with more than eight minutes remaining made it a one-possession game.
Central needed two defensive stops before getting the ball back at its on 21-yard line with 2:05 remaining. Only two plays later it was again Dallas and Wassenberg hooking up, this time on a 79-yard touchdown strike. When Berner's extra-point attempt split the uprights, it was 31-all with 1:46 remaining.
"I told the guys on the sideline when it was 31-14 that we needed 38 to win this game," Blue Valley coach Steve Rampy said. "It wasn't being prophetic. I just knew Central wouldn't quit."
Blue Valley senior Treveor Cornley started and finished the Tigers game-winning drive. His 43-yard kickoff return enabled his team to start its final possession near midfield. Junior quarterback Anthony Abenoja, who completed 29 of 52 passes for 405 yards, had three of those completions in the final drive, plus a 16-yard carry to set up first-and-goal at the 1.
Cornley finished it off on the next play, barely getting into the end zone for the game winner. Starting at its own 20, Central was able to get two plays off in the final nine seconds, but both pass attempts fell incomplete.
"We knew we were going to have to play hard and play as a team," Abenoja said. "We kind of let up when it was 31-14 but we were able to make some plays at the end."
"We didn't handle adversity or prosperity at times tonight," Rampy said. "We think we've got some people that can do some things on offense and we did at times throughout the game. And at the end of the game they made plays."
Central forced four turnovers in the game, including three interceptions in the first half -- one each for Grant Hodges, Shay Wooten and Zack Norris. But none of those interceptions led to points for the offense and Central trailed 10-7 at halftime.
Collin Ringle's fumble recovery in the third quarter did lead to a Mustang touchdown, with Dallas finding Seth Myers for a 25-yard scoring pass to make it 17-14.
"Both our offense and our defense played well enough to win," Hall said. "That was a very good defense we went against and obviously it was a very good offense. Blue Valley just has a very good team.
"We played well enough to win, but we just didn't do it."
With leading rusher Taylor Counts on the sideline with a hand injury, the Mustangs relied more on their passing game in this contest.
Dallas finished with 311 yards and four touchdowns. Myers had 116 yards and nine catches, Wassenberg five receptions for 147 yards, and tight end Lucas Allen added 48 yards and had the Mustangs' first touchdown. Sophomore Cale Sharp had 54 of his 81 yards rushing in the second half.
Blue Valley senior Luke Rampy led the Tigers with 10 catches for 190 yards and two long touchdowns, but left the game with a knee injury on the Tigers' final drive.
