Kansas City Star - A Kansas City man has been found guilty of shooting a police officer. Vernando J. Smith, 20, could be sentenced to life in prison for the first-degree assault of a Kansas City police officer and armed criminal action. Smith had previously pleaded guilty to assaulting and attempting to rob a cab driver immediately prior to shooting the officer, said Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd.
