Wichita Eagle - Two investigators testifying in a pretrial hearing for Dr. George Tiller have offered conflicting views of former Attorney General Phill Kline, who set in motion the criminal case against the Wichita abortion provider.Thomas Williams, who was Kline's chief investigator in the attorney general's office, portrayed his boss as an ethical prosecutor who nixed plans for an armed raid on Tiller's clinic.But Jared Reed, also an investigator during Kline's four years as attorney general, suggested he was anti-abortion zealot willing to break the law for the cause.Both were on the stand Wednesday in the third day of a Sedgwick County District Court hearing on efforts by Tiller's lawyers to dismiss all charges or suppress some evidence. Tiller faces trial in March on 19 misdemeanor counts of failing to get a second opinion from an independent physician before performing some late-term abortions.Testimony resumed Thursday with Steven Maxwell, a former assistant attorney general under Kline. The defense quizzed him about a July 2003 confidential memo in which he wrote that there was a legal obstacle to opening a judicial inquisition because there was no definitive complainant or allegation that a medical provider knowingly failed to report sexual abuse....
