Woman gets 26 years in hit-run deaths of workers Found: 1 Week 2 Days 16 Hours 31 Minutes ago Wichita Eagle - The woman whose speeding pickup truck struck and killed two highway workers near Lawrence has been sentenced to 26 years in prison.In Wednesday's sentencing of Ramona Morgan, Douglas County District Court Judge Paula Martin said Morgan's actions "give new meaning to the word reckless."At one point, Martin ordered Morgan to stop talking with her attorney while victims'families made statements to the court.The 49-year-old Morgan was convicted in September of two counts of reckless second-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery.Kansas Department of Transportation worker Tyrone Korte of Seneca and contractor's employee Rolland Griffith of El Dorado died when they were struck Sept. 11, 2007, in a work zone on U.S. 59 south of Lawrence.A defiant Morgan insisted she's innocent, claiming she was "set up."...
One hurt after man crashes car into apartment Found: 1 Week 4 Days 14 Hours 52 Minutes ago Wichita Eagle - A 40-year-old woman was injured when a man accidentally crashed his car through a wall and into the living room of her apartment in south Wichita late Monday night, authorities said.The crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. at Westway Apartments, 1510 W. Pawnee, near Pawnee and Seneca."He was going to go in there to pick somebody up and inadvertently rammed into the apartment,"Wichita Fire Marshal Ed Bricknell said.The woman and a second person were trapped for a short time by the debris from the crash, he said, but they were able to get out with assistance from firefighters, Bricknell said.The driver was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of an illegal substance, Bricknell said. The woman who lived in the apartment suffered a cut on her arm. While she initially refused treatment, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said she was eventually transported to Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus....
