Wildcats, Lakers surge into weekend Found: 3 Days 2 Hours 12 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - With five straight wins, Franklin-Simpson is among the hottest teams in the state. But the second-seeded Wildcats will face a team with just as much sizzle Friday when they travel to top-seeded Calloway County in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
The Lakers have won six straight, including a 34-19 victory over Russell County last week, thanks to a potent offense that averages 36.3 points per game.
“It’s definitely going to be a challenge,” Franklin-Simpson coach Tim Schlosser said. “They are a tremendously good football team. They’re very explosive offensively. We’re going to have to play extremely well in order to win the football game.”
Calloway County’s offense revolves around quarterback Casey Brockman, who has thrown for more than 2,700 yards and 31 touchdowns. Junior running back Tyrrell Willis has been a multiple threat, with eight receiving touchdowns and more than 1,200 yards rushing - including 235 yards in last week’s win.
“It’s going to be a big challenge for us defensively,” Schlosser said. “They can beat you in the air or they can take the football and run it. When they get in rhythm, they are really good.”
Schlosser said his offense must control the tempo and take pressure off the defense.
“What you hope when you get in the playoffs is that you’re playing well enough defensively to get some stops, but the key is, ‘Can your offense get first downs and keep their offense off the field?’ ” Schlosser said. “If we can take the football and keep it away from and not let their offense get into the flow of the game, I think that will be really good for us. I think our best defense this week could be our offense.”
Franklin-Simpson (8-3) also must overcome a hostile crowd, something Schlosser believes his team can handle.
“We’ve gone on the road this year and played well,” Schlosser said. “We played well at Bowling Green and of course the win at (then-Class 2A No. 1) Fort Campbell was big.
“We’ve got 17 seniors and they are a very mature bunch of kids. I think that really helps as far as leadership goes. It’s always businesslike and hopefully that will carry over to (Friday) night.”
No. 2 Butler County
at No. 1 Union County
Like Franklin-Simpson, Butler County will take to the road when it plays at Union County in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.
Friday’s game at Union County will be new territory for Butler County (10-1), which snagged the first playoff win in school history last week.
The Bears have won six straight since a triple-overtime loss to Russellville in September.
“I think our team has had really good focus this year,” Butler County coach Robert Tuck said. “They understand the situation they are in. From day one they have taken each challenge one challenge at a time. They’ve worked hard going back to last year and done all the extra things. It’s just a great group of kids.”
Union County enters at 6-5 after a 20-0 win over Adair County last week.
Sophomore running back Devin Foster has been the key offensive cog, with more than 1,500 yards rushing on the season.
“He’s a quick back,” Tuck said. “He’s got a little power, too, but we’ve seen similar backs throughout the season. We have to make sure we know where he is at all times.”
Defensively, Tuck expects Union County to bring pressure. The Bears will look to offset that with a balanced attack from quarterback Jessie Stivers (1,692 yards, 20 touchdown passes), running back Jason Byrd (1,468 yards passing, 19 touchdowns), and wideout Matt Hudnall (759 yards, eight receiving touchdowns).
“If they try to take away the run game, we can hit them in the air,” Tuck said. “If they try to take things away in the air, we can run on teams. Our line has done a very exceptional job this year. It’s been a real team effort.”
Tuck added that he expects another solid team effort Friday.
“They understand winning a game in the playoffs is important, but the journey for this season isn’t over,” Tuck said. “They understand if we lose focus this week, we can lose, and the season will be over. Our team doesn’t want that to happen.”
