Weapons hearing canceled Found: 4 Weeks 13 Hours 36 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - Due to power outages in other areas of the state, U.S. District Judge Joseph McKinley canceled all court proceedings at the federal court in Bowling Green today.
This included the expected plea of Lonnie Dale Freeman, 40, of Etoile, who is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of an unregistered short barrel rifle.
The change of plea hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. today and if a plea was not reached Freeman was scheduled for trial beginning at 1 p.m., according to court records. The hearing or trial had not been rescheduled as of this morning.
Local authorities have been waiting for the federal case to end so that Freeman could be released from federal custody to face state charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence.
Freeman and Dustin L. Asher, 32, of Glasgow are each charged with two counts of murder and tampering with physical evidence stemming from the killing of Daniel Froedge, 38, of Park City and Kelly O. Johnson, 32, of Smiths Grove.
Froedge and Johnson were shot and placed inside a vehicle that was set on fire. Their bodies were found July 28, 2005, on a gravel road less than a mile outside Scottsville.
The Warren County case is a retrial that was moved from Allen County due to publicity from the initial trial. Freeman and Asher were tried in October 2006 in Allen County. The case ended with a hung jury after more than 10 hours of deliberation.

Backs lead Raiders past Tigers Found: 1 Month 12 Hours 42 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - Even though Warren East was without its starting quarterback and four other offensive starters Friday, the Raiders still had two things that are nearly indefensible: seniors Shenard Holton and Antonious “Fuzz” Owens.
Owens and Holton combined for 443 yards and five touchdowns - including one each in the game’s final five minutes - to lead banged-up Warren East to a 36-35 come-from-behind win against visiting Bardstown.
Click here for more photos from Friday night's games.
“When we were down, Fuzz just came up to me and said that we needed to take this game over,” said Holton, who had 160 yards on 21 carries for three scores in addition to four catches for 111 yards. “And I listened to him, because in the first half I didn’t play well, but he stepped up and made plays and our offensive line opened up holes that anybody could run through.”
After Bardstown took a 35-22 lead with just more than six minutes remaining, the Raiders’ chances looked dim. But Owens returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to set East up deep in Tiger territory.
Holton then gained 39 yards on the next three plays, and Owens polished off the drive with a 1-yard plunge. The Raiders were forced to go for two - kicker and starting quarterback Andrew Alvey was inactive - and missed on a pass, making the score 35-28 with 5:02 remaining.
The Raider defense held Bardstown to a three-and-out, forcing the Tigers to punt from their own 1-yard line. Warren East got the ball back with 2:46 left on the Tigers’ 25-yard line.
Owens and Holton then combined on four catches and runs to bring East down to the 1 before Holton found the end zone on the ground with just 30 seconds remaining, cutting the lead to 35-34.
The two-point try was easier this time around, as senior quarterback Brandon Flynn found a wide-open Owens in the end zone to give the Raiders the lead and seal the win.
“We wanted this bad,” said Owens, who finished with 150 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, and another 22 yards on two receptions. “After last week’s loss, we weren’t going to take it anymore. We weren’t taking another loss and we wanted to get back to the old East, and do what we do best - win.”
Warren East coach Ben Bruni said the win wasn’t very pretty, as the Raiders committed three turnovers and were flagged several times in the second half, including 30 yards on one play.
But after the smoke cleared, Bruni said he was more than happy to take it.
“I can’t be more proud of our football team,” Bruni said. “It’s hard being a football coach because you’re so disappointed at the many things you did wrong to put you in bad positions, but at the same time you’re so proud of your kids because at the very last minute when they had to - they found a way and they found a way with heart.
“This is a team who is still trying to find out who it is, and I hope we found a little bit of who that is tonight during the last five minutes of this football game.”
After last week’s demoralizing 41-6 loss at Fort Campbell, a furious Bruni put it on his team to recommit to the season and find a way to turn things around.
Friday night, they answered the call.
“We didn’t do so much other than put it on our seniors and say that this will be their team and their legacy,” Bruni said. “It’s theirs to win or lose, it’s their season to have success or failure, and we just kind of left it in their hands.
“What more can you really do?”
Owens said that he and Holton - along with the rest of the team’s 17 seniors - had no other choice but to take things over and will have no other choice but to continue to do so as the season progresses.
“We’re seniors so we’ve got to take over, there’s nothing else to it,” Owens said. “When you’re a senior you’ve got to step up, if you want to win you’ve got to step up.
“You’ve got to have that heart and you’ve got to step up.”
Bardstown (0-3) got 68 rushing yards from DeAngelo Poynter and another 58 from Rashaun Phillips. Senior wide receiver Jordan Hickman caught two passes for 105 yards, one for a 91-yard touchdown.
Flynn finished 6-of-11 for 133 yards in his first start for the Raiders (2-1).
East will look to get healthy and build off some momentum when it travels to Allen-County Scottsville for its district opener next week, and Bruni said he hopes this win will springboard the team for the remainder of the year.
“We’ve got two wonderful running backs, some good lineman and some good role players, but Lord almighty, I feel like we’re running around out there with crutches,” Bruni said. “But to be able to win a game with so many guys out is just a wonderful testament to young men’s ability to overcome adversity.
“And this is what makes you happy to be involved with this level of the sport.”

Trial date set for Barren men charged with killing, arson Found: 1 Month 18 Hours 58 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - A date has been set in the retrial of two Barren County men accused of killing two men and then setting a vehicle on fire with the dead bodies inside.
Dustin L. Asher, 32, of Glasgow and Lonnie Dale Freeman, 40, of Etoile are each charged with two counts of murder and two counts of tampering with physical evidence.
The trial was scheduled during a hearing Friday in Warren Circuit Court to start March 17. The case was moved to Warren County due to publicity surrounding the initial trial in Scottsville; it will be tried in front of Warren Circuit Judge Steve Wilson.
Freeman and Asher were initially tried in October 2006 in Allen County. The case ended with a hung jury after more than 10 hours of deliberation.
The men are accused of killing Daniel Froedge, 38, of Park City and Kelly O. Johnson, 32, of Smiths Grove and setting a vehicle on fire with the bodies inside to cover up the crime. Their bodies were found July 28, 2005, on a gravel road outside Scottsville.
Asher’s attorney, Pat Renn of Louisville, said for the first time Friday that his client might be willing to have a trial separate from Freeman.
Asher has been in custody at the Allen County Jail since initially being charged in 2006.
Steve Romines, a Louisville attorney representing Freeman, said his client was planning to plead guilty Monday on separate federal charges in U.S. District Court in Bowling Green. Freeman is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession an unregistered short barrel rifle.
The retrial has been delayed because federal authorities will not release Freeman from federal custody to face the state murder charges.
The next hearing in this case is scheduled for Jan. 9 to cover several motions that have been filed in the case, but have not been heard because Freeman has been unable to attend hearings.
The retrial was initially scheduled for March 2008. It had then been moved to August because of Freeman’s federal trial.

Greenwood set to open district play Found: 1 Month 1 Day 11 Hours 26 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - Greenwood begins its quest for a second straight district championship when it travels to Meade County tonight for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Last year Greenwood opened district play with a 28-21 victory against the Green Wave, holding back a late rally from Meade County to pick up the win.
Greenwood coach Mark Nelson said he expects another tough battle tonight.
“I feel like we match up well with each other,” Nelson said. “Both teams are probably going to do the same things they did last year. They have a very good running back and will be the most physical team we’ve seen. It will be the same kind of game it was last year.”
Greenwood (1-1) is coming off a 7-6 victory over Allen County-Scottsville - a game Nelson believes gives his team momentum heading into district play.
“Our last two days of practice have been upbeat,” Nelson said. “Winning a ball game - I don’t care if it is one point or 40 points - you’ll take it any way you can get it and build from that.”
Nelson said one of the keys will be how his team responds to the long bus ride to Brandenburg.
“We have to be mature about the trip we are going to take,” Nelson said. “We’ve got to get our heads ready to play a game on the road two-and-a-half hours away. It’s a business trip and we have to get ready to work.”
The Gators should get a lift with the return of junior running back Dee Anderson and senior tackle Luke Taylor.
“Both those kids are great kids and good athletes that play their position well,” Nelson said. “It’s good to have them back and have that depth at their positions.”
Meade County comes into tonight’s game 0-2, dropping games to Fern Creek and John Hardin.
“Obviously, we’re not where we want to be,” Meade County coach Larry Mofield said. “Any time you’re 0-2, you’re not where you want to be. We have played a couple of pretty good football teams.
“Greenwood is a good team. They are well-coached. They have good size and the Anderson kid is one of the fastest kids we’ll face all year. We’ll have our hands full.”
The Green Wave have managed just six points in their first two games. Mofield said a number of factors have contributed to the lackluster offense.
“We’re turning the football over way too much and we’ve had way too many penalties,” Mofield said. “We’re starting first-and-15, first-and-20 ... I looked up the other night and I thought they had forgot the down marker on the other side of the field, but it was on one end of the field and (the marker) to get a first down was on the other. You can’t recover against a Little League team when you put yourself in that position.”
Mofield is also concerned about the play of his offensive line.
“John Hardin’s defensive line looked like Michael Phelps against our offensive line,” Mofield said. “They swam around us, through us, over top of us. We just didn’t execute fundamentally.”
Mofield has been pleased with his defense, though, saying the unit has played really well the past six quarters. But he thinks the Gators will test his defensive unit.
“They’re not a lot different than they were last year,” Mofield said. “You don’t see a lot of weaknesses. Like I said, we’ll have our hands full.”

Raiders hope to rebound in home opener Found: 1 Month 1 Day 11 Hours 30 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - Running back Shenard Holton has done plenty during his Warren East career, but he’ll probably get a chance tonight to try something fairly new against Bardstown.
According to East coach Ben Bruni, Holton will see some time at quarterback in the Raiders’ home opener.
Holton, who has verbally committed to the University of Louisville, will join senior Brandon Flynn behind center in place of Andrew Alvey, who took a blow to the head in East’s loss at Fort Campbell last week.
“We’ve snapped him the ball a few times,” Bruni said of Holton’s quarterback experience. “But any time you have an athlete like Shenard Holton, the more you put the ball in his hands, the better chance of winning you have.”
Holton showed his versatility two weeks ago in the Raiders’ victory at Greenwood. He rushed 12 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns, caught three passes for 44 yards and a score, plus threw a 45-yard touchdown.
“He’s their big stud,” Bardstown coach David Clark said of Holton. “He’s a very good looking player.”
Meanwhile, Bruni said Alvey will be back when district play begins next week at Allen County-Scottsville.
Alvey’s injury was only part of a frustrating performance for the Raiders (1-1) last week, when they fell 41-6 to the defending Class 2A champions.
But Bruni said the Raiders have responded well.
“I think it’s been a very good week for us in that we’ve kind of narrowed our focus,” Bruni said. “We’ve gotten back to understanding who we are and got humbled a little bit.
“I think we needed something like this to kind of wake our seniors up and to let them realize that this was in fact their team and their legacy and how they perform throughout this season will be their benchmark.”
Being at home for the first time this season also helps. Under Bruni, Warren East is 17-2 at Raider Field.
“It will be nice to be at home, especially after a long road trip,” Bruni said. “We’ve struggled on the road under my watch and that’s something we’ll have to fix if we want to have success down the road. But we play well at home.”
Like the Raiders, Bardstown probably will use two quarterbacks tonight. The Tigers are working through plenty of offensive transitions this year.
Junior quarterback Keaton Hall and senior T.J. Downs have both earned playing time for the Tigers. Hall is more of a passer while Downs is a running threat.
It’s only one of many changes for a Bardstown program that tested Warren East in the Raiders’ 27-20 win last year. Bardstown (0-2) lost 10 of 11 offensive starters and enters tonight’s game seeking its first victory.
Rashaun Phillips, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound fullback, has been the Tigers’ best offensive weapon, rushing for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries.
“We’ve shown glimpses of being able to do some things well,” Clark said. “But whenever you have a young team, you have to be consistent. We’re very inconsistent right now. We’re showing spurts of playing pretty good football. But we’re not able to maintain it for an entire game.”
While the Tigers might have struggled to open this year, Bruni said he is impressed by Bardstown’s athleticism.
“They probably have more team speed than any team I may have ever seen in high school,” Bruni said. “Obviously they are not nearly as big size-wise, but in terms of their ability to run at every position, it’s like somebody lining up 11 lightning bolts and you just hope one of them doesn’t hit you.”
The Raiders will hold a halftime ceremony tonight to honor Jody Allen, a Warren East alumnus and owner of J. Allen Homes.
Allen built a home and donated the profits - $33,350 - to the Warren East Quarterback Club. According to Bruni, it is the single largest private donation to a Warren East club or activity in school history.
“More than anything, it’s a morale booster and you feel like you’ve got a supporter and a support community that is so adamant about making sure you have the best resources possible,” Bruni said. “When you get that kind of donation, obviously it’s a significant boost.”
