WKU coach David Elson said 8220;Everything about it was awesome our facilities people did a great job marketing did a great job the student section was full the end zone was full and I can8217;t wait to watch it on film8220;It was just fun to be a part of and I know our guys were fired up about it and it8217;s something we8217;ve got to build on8221;Click here for more photos from the gameAfter all the anticipation building up to this opener it may have been hard to believe that it could live up to the hype created by the school But as far as the Hilltoppers were concerned the game surpassed it8220;It was great we were all excited to come out and just see what it would be like to play in front of that8221; senior offensive tackle Greg Ryan 8220;I think it factored into the game we feed off the fans and we fed off them tonight and it was just good to get out there and see them set a record8220;It was a blast8221;And with the crowd at full tilt from the start the Hilltoppers wasted little time getting to workWKU went to the air right from the start as senior quarterback David Wolke hit freshman receiver Derrius Brooks on the game8217;s first play for a 38yard pickup Eight plays later senior Tanner Siewert got the Hilltoppers on the board with a 30yard field goalThe turnover flood started on Murray8217;s first possession as freshman safety Ryan Beard intercepted Racer starter Chris Franklin in WKU territory before returning it 24 yards to the Racer 36The Hilltoppers then needed eight plays before senior fullback Jared Johnson bulled in from two yards out to put WKU up 100 with 2:54 remaining in the firstThe Racers had more passing trouble on their next drive as they were able to move into WKU territory once again but a Franklin pass went long and into the arms of Hilltopper freshman safety Mark Santoro on his own 10 Santoro brought the ball out to the WKU 38The Hilltopper offense would take advantage once again as Siewert capped a 10play drive with a 42yard field goal to up the lead to 130Murray State would finally strike two drives later as safety Will Werner picked off an errant David Wolke pass and returned it 56 yards for a score The pointafter attempt was blocked leaving the score at 136The WKU offense would answer right back however as Wolke would lead the team on a 72yard march 045; highlighted by a 44yard screen pass to senior Stephen Willis 045; before capping the drive himself with a twoyard plunge to regain a twoscore advantageThe defense needed just two more plays to get back on the board as junior linebacker Blake Boyd picked off a Franklin pass and ran 25 yards untouched to make things 276 before halftimeAfter both teams would trade field goals early in the third quarter WKU redshirt freshman running back Bobby Rainey would essentially put the capper on things 045; returning a kickoff 92 yards to the MSU oneyard line Two plays later junior running back Marrel Booker found the end zone 045; putting the Hilltoppers up 379 with 4:45 to go in the thirdSophomore receiver Quinterrance Cooper would add to the lead with 1:38 to play in the third hauling in a 54yard touchdown pass from Wolke 045; WKU8217;s longest play from scrimmage this season Junior running back Andrew McCloud would cap the night with an 18yard scoring run with 3:54 left in the gameElson said he felt the team8217;s performance overall was solid but nothing to get overly excited about 045; he also gave credit to the Racers who were playing without suspended head coach Matt Griffin8220;I thought it was OK I was hoping to get off to a better start offensively running the ball But I8217;ll tell you what 045; Murray State8217;s pretty good8221; Elson said 8220;They8217;ve got some big cats up front and I was impressed with them8220;But we wanted to throw the ball downfield and we did8221;Wolke threw for a WKU seasonhigh 254 yards on 15of25 passing Cooper Jessie Quinn and Wenquel Graves all had at least three catches in the Hilltoppers8217; best passing day to date8220;I think a bunch of guys made some big plays got us in the end zone and things like that and that8217;s what we wanted to do8221; Wolke said 8220;The way they played defense we thought that we could get downfield on them and throw some deep balls 045; and I just think that everybody played a really good football game and the score showed it8221;Elson said he felt a sense of relief with the muchhyped home opener finally being in the books and hopes the team can build off some momentum gained 045; especially next week in Lexington8220;For a guy like me who8217;s had the same routine for 12 years it was different tonight8221; Elson said 8220;But our guys did a really good job of staying focused and prepared and late in the week we challenged them to be excited and things like that but remember we have to continue to mature as a team 045; and I thought we did a little tonight8221;
