that is a right reserved until 21But in efforts to curb binge drinking on campuses presidents from some of the nation8217;s most prestigious colleges and universities are calling for a debate aimed at getting lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age to 18Lowering the drinking age is a mixed bag in the opinion of Western Kentucky University students with some saying the age limit shouldn8217;t be dropped8220;I think the age is good where it is at8221; said Danville freshman Jasmine Wilkerson 18 8220;People are immature and they8217;re not ready8221;Nashville junior Sharday Evans 21 agreed saying at her age a person is more mature and able to adapt in situations where alcohol is involved8220;The peer pressure to drink isn8217;t there8221; she saidBut some think 18 is an appropriate age to legally drink including 18yearold Auburn freshman Esther Orndorff8220;I think it should be lowered8221; she said noting she doesn8217;t drink 8220;If you8217;re old enough to be adults at 18 and take responsibility if you can vote and change law why not be able to drink8221;Freshman Andrew Marley 18 agreed8220;Everyone already does it anyway so it would make sense if it was lowered there wouldn8217;t be such a hype to get alcohol if the age was lowered8221;That8217;s the logic behind the Amethyst Initiative: Lowering the drinking age might get students to drink less WKU President Gary Ransdell said there are two competing perspectives 045; one suggests a way to reduce consumption is to lower the drinking age on the theory that if it8217;s legal there8217;s less peer pressure to participateThe initiative 045; started by John McCardell former president of Middlebury College in Vermont 045; began recruiting presidents more than a year ago to elicit a national debate about the drinking age Higher education leaders including Murray State University President Randy Dunn have signed their names to a public statement agreeing that the legal drinking age is not working and specifically that it has created a culture of dangerous binge drinking on their campuses according to the initiative8217;s Web siteDunn is the only president of a Kentucky institution to sign the listThe other perspective Ransdell said suggests a major crackdown on consumption period8220;I see value in both sides of the debate8221; Ransdell said 8220;I have not signed either document nor have I cast WKU8217;s position in the debate I8217;m more interested in what8217;s right for us We will determine our institutional values in our community rather than be shaped by some national debate8221;Some students see both sides too like WKU student Ashley Rowe 22 of Owensboro She said while kids should wait to drink as she had to if the age was lowered it wouldn8217;t be such a big deal But she said when people start to drink at 18 it seems they get in more troubleAs college presidents rally other college and university presidents to support the initiative they are already encountering criticism from individuals and organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving who say lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashesA study done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found in 2006 an estimated 15827 people died in alcoholrelated traffic crashes 045; an average of one every 33 minutes according to MADD8217;s Web site These deaths constitute 37 percent of the 42532 total traffic fatalities Of these 13470 involved a driver with an illegal blood alcohol concentration of 08 or greaterDarlene Cowsert parent of a WKU freshman said parents often worry about those who are out drinking and driving which could increase if the legal drinking age is lowered8220;Obviously there8217;s going to be more drinking and I think they8217;ll take advantage of that freedom8221; she said 8220;And it could influence people younger than 18 to drink It8217;s an awful lot of responsibility to give a young person8221;Both sides agree that alcohol consumption among college students is a problem and so do some students8220;It is a problem8221; Evans said 8220;Underage drinking happens too much around here8221;However Ransdell said while the university may have concerns its problems are not as serious as on some campuses and in some communitiesThe fact remains that alcohol consumption is part of college life and students under 21 will drink anyway Rowe said She said kids like to do what8217;s wrong 045; 8220;rebelling against anything and everything8221;8220;If they want to drink they8217;re going to drink whether 18 19 20 or 21 They8217;re going to drink no matter what8221; Orndorff said 8220;They like the way it makes them feel8221;
