Western Ky. man charged with murder Found: Minutes ago Lexington Hearld-Leader - A western Kentucky man has been charged with murder in the death of a man who was found dead in an Owensboro motel room.
Police charged 46-year-old Dennis Maurice Shreve of Dundee in Ohio County on Wednesday. He's being held at the Daviess County Detention Center without bond.
Shreve is charged in the death of 21-year-old Dustin R. Condor of Owensboro, whose body was found Aug. 19. Condor had been shot once in the head.
Shreve was initially charged with tampering with physical evidence. The Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro reported that police accused Shreve of removing a handgun and other items from the motel room.
Police say Shreve told them Condor was playing with the gun and accidentally killed himself but later changed the story and said Condor was shot when the weapon discharged as the two men struggled over it....
Vicksburg Civil War park acquires another memory Found: 4 Days 9 Hours 52 Minutes ago Lexington Hearld-Leader -
VICKSBURG, Miss. . After years of work and waiting, Connecticut will have a monument in the Vicksburg National Military Park.
It will be a tribute to the men of the 9th Connecticut Regiment Volunteers . known as the Irish Regiment . who, in the summer of 1862, dug Grant's Canal across Louisiana's DeSoto peninsula so Union ships could bypass Vicksburg and its Confederate guns. Long denied a place at the military park because of the timing of their service, the 9th's monument will be installed in October.
National Park Service workers broke ground this past week at the monument site, across the river near Delta, La., where traces of Grant's Canal remain. The canal was begun in June 1862 and abandoned the next January after several disastrous attempts.
The 9th was there for two months. About 150 men from the regiment died from malaria, dysentery and heat stroke. One of them, John Marlow of New Haven, Conn., was the great-great-grandfather of Bob Larkin, a Cheshire, Conn., resident who has worked for nearly 10 years to see a memorial at the park for the men of the 9th. ...

Pronounced dead at the scene Sunday night south of London was 26-year-old Chris Powers of Jonesboro, Ill. The second cyclist, 26-year-old Kevin Alshouse of McHenry, Ill., was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the driver of the car that was stopped, Ramondo Cabrera-Ceron, and a passenger weren't injured.
The newspaper says Roberts is a five-year state police veteran. The case remains under investigation....

Another memory for Vicksburg civil war park Found: 5 Days 12 Hours 7 Minutes ago Lexington Hearld-Leader - After years of work and waiting, Connecticut will have a monument in the Vicksburg National Military Park.

"It's been tiring but very rewarding because of my ancestor," Larkin said in a phone interview, shortly after the centerpiece of the Connecticut monument was unveiled in a Hartford ceremony by Gov. M. Jodi Rell. "I found a lot of other people with ancestors who were in Vicksburg that are interested in history and were anxious to see some mention of what they went through. They weren't at the final battlefield and siege, but they were there the year before."...
Company showing interest in Logan ambulance service Found: 6 Days 4 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - An Ohio County company has expressed interest in operating an ambulance service in Logan County, but magistrates will likely have to put the service out for bids.
Logan County Judge-Executive Logan Chick said he recently learned that a long-term service agreement, such as the one they would need to operate an ambulance service, needs to be bid.
Commonwealth Health Corp. in July said it no longer wished to operate the Logan County service, forcing the county to look elsewhere.
King Drugs, which operates Ohio County’s Ambulance Service, has shown interest in operating the service, which would utilize the county’s ambulance building in Russellville, Chick said.
“I think Ohio County is right satisfied with them,” he said.
Ohio County Judge-Executive David Jones said King has been operating the service for eight years, having taken over operations from a Leitchfield company.
“The county tried, like 25 years ago, to have its own ambulance service, but it just wasn’t very successful,” said Jones, who has been judge-executive for two years and a magistrate for the eight years prior to that.
“We have not had any problems at all; it’s kind of the best service you could get - a Cadillac,” Jones said.
King handles all the operations, including personnel, to operate the advanced life support service. The county pays for the ambulances, provides a building, maintenance and utilities.
The service’s main base is in Hartford, and it keeps an ambulance 20 miles away in Fordsville.
Ohio County is slightly smaller, areawise, than Logan County. It has a population of 23,560 people, where Logan County’s population is 27,129.
According to the Ohio County Emergency Services Web site, the service responds to about 3,400 calls a year. In the most recent year, Ohio County’s contract with King to offer service was for $90,300, Jones said. Utilities were an additional $22,000.
Because bids have not been taken, it’s not known how much it would cost for King or any other company to operate a service in Logan County.
This year, CHC is being paid $260,000 to offer the service; the beginning of that one-year contract was July 1.
Chick said before the service can be bid, he will need to meet with CHC to see what capital equipment will be transferred to Logan County for the operation of an ALS service.
“We also need to know what their intentions are for the certificates of need,” he said.
CHC has two certificates of need to operate the service in Logan - one purchased from the county, and the other purchased from Auburn Rural Fire Department more than 10 years ago.
“If we get a quick response, we could put it out for bids and have an agreement by January or early February,” Chick said. “That would give us three months or so for the transition period, which CHC continues to say it will work with us through.”
Jim Duke, the administrator for King, said it’s too early to say how his company might handle operations in Logan County if it were selected to do so.
“I’m sure the (fiscal court’s) committee has talked to other individuals, including myself, about its options to have an ambulance service,” Duke said. “I believe the committee is making sure they have quality EMS service available for residents.”
