Dragons begin campaign with disappointing 49-13 defeat Found: 1 Week 2 Hours 59 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - The Warren Central football team stumbled out of the gate Saturday and was unable to recover, falling 49-13 to Boyle County in the opening game of the Rafferty’s Bowl at El Donaldson Stadium.
Warren Central (0-1) allowed 42 points in the first half and was unable to get its running game started - finishing with just 23 yards on the ground.
“Obviously we’re disappointed we didn’t play better,” Warren Central coach Bill Cox said. “Boyle County has a very fine football team. They are exceptionally fundamental. They make plays when they’re supposed to. I thought the first series or two, we played pretty good football, and then we let them score and got down a little bit and it got a lot easier for them.”
Boyle County (1-0) was forced to punt on its first possession, but the Rebels scored on five straight possessions and added a defensive score to put the game away by halftime.
“We’ve worked hard on our offense all week long,” Boyle County coach Larry French said. “(Quarterback Phillip Mason) ran the offense and did a nice job of reading the defense. We did a nice job of catching the football and blocking up front. I think when you get that combination going ... you’re going to win some football games.”
Mason, who was named the offensive MVP after throwing for 180 yards and two touchdowns, was quick to credit the play of his guys in the trenches.
“The key for this game was our offensive line,” Mason said. “We worked after the Madison Central scrimmage because we really couldn’t run the ball. We worked hard in practice all week and we got after it tonight.”
The rushing attack got the Rebels started, when Rees MacShara scored on a 46-yard run on the second possession of the game to make the score 7-0.
After a Warren Central interception, the Rebels scored again on a 2-yard keeper by Mason with 4:34 left in the quarter.
Boyle County was on the board again just 23 seconds later, after the defense recovered a fumble and Mason connected with Brett Marshall on a 17-yard touchdown pass.
Mason added his second touchdown pass midway through the second quarter, and MacShara picked up his second rushing touchdown to make the score 35-0.
Boyle County capped the first-half scoring when Marshall, the defensive MVP, intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.
The Rebels finished the first half with 282 yards of total offense - including 180 yards in the air. Mason completed 12 passes in the first half to seven different receivers, as Boyle County continued to exploit the Dragons’ shaky secondary.
“That actually surprised me because I thought they would make some adjustments,” Mason said. “Coming out of the half, they made a lot of adjustments and kind of shut us down after that first drive.”
Boyle County made the score 49-0 on its first drive of the second half, marching 60 yards in eight plays and capping the drive with a 9-yard run by MacShara.
Warren Central’s offense finally got going late in the third quarter, when Denzel Carpenter made a leaping grab over the shoulder of a Boyle County defender and raced into the endzone for a 55-yard score.
Carpenter struck again in the fourth quarter with an 84-yard scoring strike.
Carpenter’s two touchdowns came on his only two scores of the night, while quarterback Quenton Smith finished 10-for-14 for 215 yards passing with two TD’s and two interceptions.
Tabarus Mitchell was the Dragons’ leading rusher with 15 yards on nine carries.
“We’ll go back to work,” Cox said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids that made mistakes that we can correct. We just have to keep working. It’s very early and we know now if we expect to go where we want to, there is a lot of things we have to turn around.”
Warren Central will host North Hardin on Friday, while Boyle County will play at Henry Clay.

Rafferty's Bowl: Warren Central, Rebels looking for strong start Found: 1 Week 1 Day 12 Hours 5 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - Both Warren Central and Boyle County had seasons they’d like to forget last year, and both could take a big step in getting rid of those memories in tonight’s Rafferty’s Bowl opener.
The Dragons enter their meeting with tradition-rich Boyle County - at Bowling Green High’s El Donaldson Stadium - with some questions lingering following last season.
After going 6-6 last year, their worst record since 2004, Central also had its shortest playoff stint since 2002, when it was knocked out of the postseason in the second round. A win over Boyle County - which won five straight state championships from 1999-2003 - would immediately have the Dragons feeling good about this season.
“It’s very exciting,” Central coach Bill Cox said. “If you can go in and do well against them, it can really get you going.”
But it’s not the same Boyle County that dominated only a few years ago. The Rebels went 5-7 last year for their first losing season since 1993.
Former Lincoln County coach Larry French will make his Boyle County coaching debut tonight. Although there’s been some change for the Rebels, French said the program hasn’t been overhauled.
“Any time you come in new, the kids have to get used to everything new,” French said. “We’ve tried not to change a whole lot of things.
“The way we conduct practice and philosophy-wise has been pretty similar to what they’ve been used to in the past.”
French said his biggest issue has been getting to know his personnel.
“I’m still trying to learn names,” French said. “They change names on me every day, or they seem to be. We’ve got about 90 kids out for the team and that’s been the hardest thing, just trying to put names with faces.”
One name he knows is tight end/quarterback/linebacker Jordan Aumiller.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Aumiller had 392 receiving yards and also threw for 1,055 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s verbally committed to the University of Kentucky.
“It’s a very strong traditional football program and they are a great team,” Cox said. “They never have a bad team, and I think that this team fits the mold of a Boyle County team.”

Mitchell has big running shoes to fill Found: 1 Week 3 Days 8 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - Warren Central senior running back Tabarus Mitchell knows the names of the players who preceded him. They’ve all been successful.
Go back to 1990 and former Central running back Damon Hood, who ran his way to Mr. Football honors. More recently, players such as Darrius Brooks, Quinten Curry and Tevon Boards have racked up big rushing numbers for the Dragons.
It’s a legacy that’s impossible to ignore.
“I don’t think anybody that goes to school here and is a running back isn’t aware of that,” Central coach Bill Cox said. “We had Mr. Football and a number of outstanding running backs that have set a tradition.”
Nor is it something that Mitchell shies away from as he gets his chance this season to gain a little notoriety.
“Pretty much every year there’s been a good back,” Mitchell said. “I’m just going to try and do better than they did.”
Mitchell got a sample of the position as a junior last year, splitting carries with Boards.
But Boards was a senior, meaning there’s now more responsibility for Mitchell.
“There’s more (pressure) because if I’m not going to do good, we’re not going to do good,” Mitchell said. “But if I do good, hopefully we’re going to win.”
Cox said Mitchell will get his opportunity for a heavy workload. But beginning Saturday against Boyle County, he has to prove if he can handle it.
“Now the weight falls on his shoulders,” Cox said. “I think there are great expectations and we’re going to find out what happens. I think he has the quality, but we’re going to have to find out if he has the stamina, endurance and things like that.”
Don’t consider Mitchell someone who is concerned about it.
“I’m going to be used to it,” Mitchell said. “That’s how I want it anyway. More carries, I think it’s going to be good for me.”
One possible factor hampering Mitchell’s chances is his size. As Cox said, “we wish he was a little bigger and had more size.”
Mitchell is listed at 5-foot-11, 170 pounds. It’s not the ideal numbers for someone who wants to consistently run between the tackles while grinding out yards.
“We’re not afraid to run him inside because he runs well inside,” Cox said. “We just don’t want to put him in there and get banged on all game for 10 ballgames. If we can get him out and get the ball to him some in the passing game and get him away from the interior, that’s a plus.”
Size might have been Mitchell’s concern as a freshman, when he said he was 5-7 and 130 pounds.
“I would get nervous, but you couldn’t really worry about it,” Mitchell said. “It made me a lot better and as I got older it made it easier.”
Now Mitchell tries to run around people.
“I can get around them most of the time and juke them,” Mitchell said. “I don’t have to take as many hits as the other backs do.”
Not only does Mitchell want a heavy workload and want to continue the Central running back legacy, he also wants to go out on a high note.
Mitchell’s junior season turned out to be disappointing as the Dragons went 6-6 and were bumped out of the postseason in the second round.
It’s not something he wants to relive.
“It was very frustrating because I know we had the athletes to be good but we just didn’t play well,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got a lot on our backs (to change things), but I think we should be pretty good.”
