Evansville Courier & Press - A Delaware banrkuptcy judge has decided to postpone a hearing in which he was to consider Eldorado's request that Tropicana be forced to announce publicly if it will sell Casino Aztar. In a letter sent last week, Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel encourages the Indiana Gaming Commission to insist that the casino be sold. The casino is owned by Tropicana Entertainment, a company Weinzapfel has clashed with in the past.In 2007, Weinzapfel asked Indiana regulators to investigate Tropicana Entertainment after he learned it had laid off a large number of Aztar employees. Ky. Clinton supporters now rallying to Obama
Found: 2 Months 3 Weeks 4 Days 17 Hours 27 Minutes ago
Lexington Hearld-Leader - Hillary Rodham Clinton's pleas for party unity weren't needed to convince Kentucky Democrats like Bonnie Gibson to switch their allegiance to Barack Obama. Gibson, a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, liked Clinton's experience in Washington and supported the New York senator's landslide win in Kentucky's May primary. Now the delegate from Bowling Green is on Obama's side for the fall campaign. "I always felt that Hillary was the better of the two, but I've never had any problem with Obama," she said by phone Wednesday. "I think he will make us a great president." Obama, who faces an uphill fight against Republican John McCain in Kentucky, has to hope other Clinton supporters are as easily won over....

Clinton supporters now rallying to Obama

Lexington Hearld-Leader - Hillary Rodham Clinton didn't need to convince Kentuckians like Bonnie Gibson to switch their allegiance to Barack Obama. Gibson was a strong Clinton supporter but is now backing Obama for president. Gibson is among the Kentuckians attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Another Kentucky delegate, Sara Sidebottom of Crestview Hills, says the Clinton supporters withholding support from Obama amount to a small minority. Sidebottom says she'll pitch in to help Obama this fall, but says she understands the frustration of Clinton supporters who wanted to see a woman president. Gibson, a delegate from Bowling Green, says she doesn't expect Republican John McCain to have much success in courting Clinton supporters to his side in the presidential race. Clinton easily trounced Obama in Kentucky's presidential primary in May....

WKU makes it into top 10 in annual list by U.S. News

Bowling Green Daily News - Western Kentucky University saw an increase in its ranking among public universities in the South that offer master’s degrees in the U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2009. America’s Best Colleges 2009 ranked colleges and universities in several categories, including those that offer master’s degrees. Western is No. 10 among public universities in the South that offer master’s degrees, up from its rank of 12 in the 2008 rankings. Among all universities in the South that offer master’s degrees, Western rose from a rank of 32 to 29. “It’s progress,” WKU President Gary Ransdell said. “There are so many rankings ... they all have flaws and biases. But when you start showing up and moving up on most of them, then you know you’re doing some things right.” Other universities in the state made the best colleges list, including Bellarmine University in Louisville, which had a rank of 16 and a score of 66; and Murray State University, which had a rank of 18 and a score of 63. Thomas More College in Crestview Hills came in at 50 with a score of 41, and Morehead State University came in at 56 with a score of 41. U.S. News gathered data - such as retention of students and faculty resources - from each college and used it to create a snapshot of academic quality. Each factor was assigned a weight, and the colleges in each category were ranked against their peers, based on their composite weighted score. Slight improvements in several rating categories, such as average graduation rate and the percentage of freshmen in the top 25 percent of their class, helped WKU’s ranking. The university also held steady in average freshmen retention rate, student-to-faculty ratio and its percentage of full-time faculty. The university showed the most improvement in its academic reputation, a fact that Ransdell was please with. WKU’s peer ranking - a 3.3 out of 5 - was highest among benchmark institutions, such as Middle Tennessee State University and Indiana State University, and those institutions within the state. The Peer Assessment score indicates how similar institutions view WKU. The U.S. News ranking formula gives greatest weight to the opinions of those in a position to judge a school’s undergraduate academic excellence, according to the magazine’s report. Although U.S. News collected peer assessment data from more than 4,000 colleges, this year’s participation rate saw a decline. Only 46 percent of colleges and universities returned the survey that makes up the largest part of the ranking formula, down from the 51 percent that participated in the 2008 rankings. But Western’s peer assessment score is one Ransdell said he is proud of - it counts for 25 percent of the university’s total ranking. “It means confidence,” he said. “It helps with the institution’s self-esteem and it’s assurance we’re moving in the right direction.” ...
