Hotel business steady, but caution urged Found: 1 Month 5 Days 9 Hours 9 Minutes ago Bowling Green Daily News - With less than $900,000 in unrestricted reserves, auditor Jerry Shelton urged the Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau to be cautious in its spending.
Shelton told board members Thursday that the number was less than a year’s expenses, which typically are about $1.1 million in reviewing the audit.
As for what is a good number to hold in reserve, Shelton said: “There’s not a magic number.”
But in today’s economy, a year’s expenses in reserve would not be too much, he said.
Board Chairman Dan Riley said there is fine line in the public’s mind between cautious spending and hoarding money.
Shelton, who noted a clean audit overall, said it’s apparent that right now tax revenues on motel rooms will continue to go down.
Vicki Fitch, executive director of the CVB, showed how those revenues are declining with figures from Smith Travel Research.
August room occupancy was at 56.3 percent, down 12.4 percent from the previous August. The average room rate was $73.37, down 1.6 percent, and the average revenue available per room was $41.29, down 13.8 percent.
“Year to date, we are still hanging in there,” Fitch said.
Revenue for year to date is up 4 percent, but that is just since the fiscal year began in July.
“We need to be very much aware that we are going to reach a point where the revenue begins to decline,” said board member Jeremy Bratcher, who also is general manager for the Hilton Garden Inn.
Bratcher said there has been a significant drop off in corporate travel, which is the bread and butter for Bowling Green hoteliers.
“Companies are scrambling about what to do,” he said of both the corporate and hotel world. “It may take awhile to recover, so the numbers may be tight for a while. As a whole, we are all feeling it.”
Fitch said her office is “being very cautious with our spending.”
If the expense won’t directly impact the number of motel rooms being filled or tourism dollars, it isn’t been spent, she said.
“We are even trying to carpool to cut down on mileage reimbursement,” Fitch said.
Board member Leon Volkert, who owns Fairfield Inn, said August numbers were down from last year but “in reality August was one of our good months this year.
“It is a sinking tide nationwide,” Volkert said. “I don’t really think it has anything to do with Bowling Green.”
Volkert said when gas prices soared above $4 a gallon, hoteliers thought that was the issue for travel cutbacks. But now that gas has dropped - today it’s at $2.79 a gallon - he feels the worry has switched to the overall economy.
In other matters, board members heard about CVB’s continued efforts to bring visitors to Bowling Green, including: the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents will meet here in July with 150 participants, the Buick GS Nationals will return in May, the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen will have a spring show here, and the board should learn later this month if the KHSAA Football Tournament will come to Bowling Green for 2009 and 2010.
Fitch informed board members that Paducah’s Executive Inn closed last month, putting in jeopardy the large quilt show held there each year.
“I have talked to the city’s CVB and they are expecting to find out this week if it’s something they will still host,” Fitch said.
Staff members have been unable to make personal contact with the quilt show organizers, she said.
“I think it’s something that is definitely worth pursuing,” board member Larry Bailey said.
Fitch also told the board that a lawsuit filed against online hotel discounters, which Bowling Green had joined, has been dismissed.
“I’m still waiting to hear from (city attorney) Gene Harmon about what the next step might be,” she said.
Volkert noted that similar lawsuits filed elsewhere had not been dismissed.
