Guthrie preps for new position
Found: 1 Week 19 Hours 19 Minutes ago
Bowling Green Daily News - After a week in Washington, D.C., Congressman-elect Brett Guthrie is back in Bowling Green, wrapping up his work at his family’s business, Trace Die Cast. The Republican, who was elected earlier this month to the 2nd District U.S. House of Representatives seat, also is contemplating when to resign from his state Senate seat, given that there may be an upcoming special session. Speculation today was that Gov. Steve Beshear could call a special session in December to deal with a $456 million revenue shortfall. Guthrie said since he’s been in D.C. the last week, he isn’t sure what the likelihood of that is or what specific legislation might be considered in a special session. While in Washington, Guthrie said he hired two key staff members for the Washington office - Eric Bergren and Megan Spindel, both staffers for U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis, R-Cecilia, whom Guthrie is replacing. “They both have connections to the district,” he said. Bergren, who’s been in Lewis’ office for 14 years, has in-laws in Nelson County and Spindel is from Hancock County. Bergren will be Guthrie’s chief of staff. He has held various positions, including his most recent as chief of staff. “I did do some interviews, but I had gotten to know Eric through Congressman Lewis, and from talking with others found that he was really well respected on Capitol Hill,” Guthrie said. “It is a true honor to serve the people of such a wonderful congressional district,” Bergren said in a news release. “The 2nd District is home to so many interesting and historic places - Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace, Ft. Knox, Mammoth Cave, the Barbecue Capital of the World, and the Corvette plant. It has a rich history, wonderful people and I am honored to continue my service.” Spindel worked with Lewis on farm policy and a year ago was appointed legislative director, the same position she will hold in Guthrie’s office. Guthrie said he hopes to have his field offices set up before Christmas. “One of the things we learned about last week was how to go about leasing office space and the rules that go along with it,” Guthrie said. His main office will be in Bowling Green and others would likely be in Owensboro and Elizabethtown. Lewis’ main office was in Elizabethtown and had just a two-person office in the Warren County Justice Center. That space probably wouldn’t be large enough. “So we will have to see what’s available,” he said. Guthrie said while the final budget numbers are not yet available, he will be getting about $1.3 million to operate all his offices, including the D.C. office, and to cover the cost of his travel. Guthrie’s wife, Beth, and children Caroline, 15, Robby, 13, and Elizabeth, 10, will remain in Bowling Green and he will commute on weekends. “That’s one of the things they talked about is that you have better control of your schedule if you stay based at home,” he said. All the legislative work is not just in Washington; many weeks congressmen are required to be working in their districts. “It just gives you more time with your family than if they were to move to Washington,” he said. And the cost of enough space for a family of five would be much higher. “We (Guthrie and his wife) looked at a small efficiency near Capitol Hill and the rent was as much as our mortgage payment in Briarwood,” he said. “But that’s all right, I ran for the office and that’s part of it.” Also last week, Guthrie spent time with Kentucky’s Congressional delegation and with the other members of the freshmen class that, when all the seats are filled, will total 54. And 54 is what Guthrie drew when it came time for office room assignments. He got the last available Congressional office. But it wasn’t the dregs as one might expect. “It’s actually not bad,” he said. “The worst thing is that it may be hard for constituents to get to.” It’s on the fifth floor of the Cannon Building. The floor was added onto an existing building so not all elevators go to the fifth floor. “My concern is for when people from home come to visit that they will be able to find me,” Guthrie said. The office, 510, also has a bit of historical significance. It was occupied by Richard Nixon from 1947 to 1951 while he was in the House of Representatives. “That’s pretty neat,” he said. Guthrie expects to learn in early January what his committee assignments will be. He will be pitching to be on the Armed Services and Transportation Committees. “I think I can make a pretty good case for those with my background in the military and Fort Knox being in the district and with my work in the state Senate,” he said. Guthrie currently serves as chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. ...

Beshear opens up energy discussion
Found: 1 Week 4 Days 11 Hours 23 Minutes ago
Th Gleaner - FRANKFORT -- Decades after closing the door to nuclear power, political leaders in Kentucky have begun a dialogue that could lift a legal ban on such generating plants.Gov. Steve Beshear opened the discussion Thursday by publicly releasing a 144-page plan that calls for the state to decide whether nuclear power will be part of a broad range of initiatives aimed at meeting Kentucky's energy needs. Coal would be its centerpiece, but biofuels, conservation, natural gas from shale and nuclear power could also be components....

Steelers try to cover spread this week
Found: 1 Week 5 Days 19 Hours 27 Minutes ago
Lexington Hearld-Leader - The fans who bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers last week were done a disservice by the zebras, although the NFL's apology for the bad call never mentioned that it kept the Steelers from covering the spread. The spread is bigger for Thursday night's game at Heinz Field, but the opponent is easier: the Cincinnati Bengals, who managed to play Philadelphia to the first tie the NFL has had in six seasons. "It feels weird," receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh said after Shayne Graham missed a field-goal attempt at the end of overtime and the game ended 13-13. The Steelers' win over San Diego was even more historic than Cincinnati's tie; the score was 11-10, the first such score in NFL history. It should have been 17-10 or 18-10 because the NFL has conceded the officials were wrong in disallowing Troy Polamalu's touchdown on the last play of the game, when he ran the ball into the end zone after a frantic series of laterals by the Chargers. Pittsburgh is favored by 10 1/2 against the Bengals as it tries to keep or extend its one-game lead over Baltimore in the AFC North....

Steelers beat Chargers in NFL's first 11-10 game
Found: 2 Weeks 1 Day 15 Hours 48 Minutes ago
Lexington Hearld-Leader - The only thing perfect on a snowy, frigid day when the weather and the offenses were equally awful was San Diego's regular-season record in Pittsburgh. Make it 0-13. Ben Roethlisberger stayed away from the mistakes that cost the Steelers their previous two home games, Willie Parker ran for 115 yards and Jeff Reed's third field goal won it - a 32-yarder with 11 seconds remaining - as Pittsburgh rallied to beat the Chargers 11-10 on Sunday. The 11-10 final was the first in NFL history, and it was in jeopardy when Troy Polamalu returned an errant lateral 12 yards for an apparent touchdown on the final play. But it was overturned on replay - called an illegal forward pass - and the 11-10 score was restored....

Big Rivers' 'unwind' still lacks OK from city
Found: 2 Weeks 2 Days 21 Hours 28 Minutes ago
Th Gleaner - The lengthy, complicated and still unresolved issue of the Big Rivers Electric Corp. "unwind" will go before the Kentucky Public Service Commission next month. But while the eventual PSC ruling has huge consequences for this region, one thing the commission can't do is force a settlement to an ongoing, and seemingly unsolvable, disagreement involving Henderson Municipal Power and Light. That leaves in doubt who will operate the Big Rivers and city of Henderson Station Two power plants -- and, more immediately, raises doubts about the future of the two western Kentucky aluminum smelters that could be forced to close if they can't quickly find a large source of affordable electricity. ...
