Salem Cross Inn founder Henry R. Salem remembered as visionary
Found: Minutes ago
Union News & Republican - The inn in West Brookfield became a destination for area residents and tourists. The Republican file photoHenry R. Salem, founder of the Salem Cross Inn in West Brookfield, sits outside the inn in this 2004 photo. Salem died Sunday at the age of 89. By CHRIS HAMEL chamel@repub.com WEST BROOKFIELD - The late Henry R. Salem was remembered Monday as a visionary, family-oriented man who helped turn a ramshackle farm here into the iconic Salem Cross Inn. Salem died Sunday at his home in North Brookfield. He was 89. One of his seven children, Martha H. Salem-Leasca, of West Brookfield, said that her father, a Worcester native, bought the dilapidated farmhouse on Route 9 at auction in the 1950s. She said that by enlisting the help of his family - including his late brother Richard, of West Brookfield, with whom he later ran the inn - he renovated the property and had the restaurant operating by 1961. She said he owned businesses in several fields, including dairy, trucking and lamination enterprises. His last working day at the inn was on Father's Day, June 15. "My dad had a vision," she said. "He was the leader of the pack, an idea man. He was very determined, very tenacious, loved a challenge." State Sen. Stephen M. Brewer, D-Barre, said that Salem had access to the power elite, including those on Beacon Hill, but also had a common touch that saw him perform philanthropic work in the community without fanfare. Brewer said that people in Boston, who may not have detailed knowledge of central and Western Massachusetts, always seem to know about Old Sturbridge Village and the Salem Cross Inn. "It has national cachet," he said. "(Salem) was one of those guys everybody knew." Leonard N. Weake, president of the Quaboag Hills Chamber of Commerce, who also described Salem as visionary, said that he knew not only the food industry overall, but his restaurant's niche in it. He said Salem knew the customers he wanted and how to woo them, including those who traveled into the area on bus trips. "He was a brilliant man," Weake said. "The Salem Cross Inn could be considered as a destination, where folks would come from all over." He also lauded Salem and his family's willingness to promote the entire area, not just their business. "They're real people, very concerned about the area, not just themselves," he said. "They see the big picture." Mansour Ghalibaf, of Worcester, who owns and manages the Hotel Northampton and its Wiggins Tavern, said that he first met Salem about 10 years ago, when the latter visited the hotel. He said he was drawn quickly to Salem's generosity and genuineness. "He impressed me with how he was with people, his family," Ghalibaf said. "In staff meetings at the hotel, I used him as an example, (including) how a family should be and how they work together." Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Varnum Funeral Home in West Brookfield. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at North Brookfield Congregational Church, followed by a burial in Walnut Grove Cemetery in North Brookfield. ...
