Construction begins on Golden Corral restaurant on Boston Road in ...

Union News & Republican - Two other restaurants will also be opening in the area.By MIKE PLAISANCE mplaisance@repub.com SPRINGFIELD - Construction has begun at Boston Road and Parker Street on a Golden Corral steak and buffet restaurant that will employ 80 people and open around mid-January, its owner said. "It's good for the city. We'll employ local residents, so it's good for everyone," Peter Lee, of Chapel Hill, N.C., who plans to move here and run the restaurant, said in a phone interview Sept. 2. Two other restaurants are preparing to open along the nearby Boston Road corridor, one in Springfield and the other in Wilbraham. Golden Corral, the 10,330-square-foot restaurant would seat 324 people and have 129 parking spaces, Lee said. The project involves an investment of $3 million to $4 million, he said. Yellow construction trucks and crews have been rambling across the property for a few weeks, and were on the site Thursday along with piles of dirt, building materials and a squared-off cavity in the ground. The property abuts Loon Pond, and Lee had to work out wetlands issues with the city before proceeding with construction. Lee also applied for and received a zone change from the City Council on Aug. 20 of Residence B to Business A. The change applied to three parcels on the west side of Parker Street that abut Loon Pond. According to the company Web site, the first Golden Corral restaurant opened in Fayetteville, N.C. in 1973. The company has 476 restaurants, of which 353 are franchised and 123 are company owned, the Web site said. In 2005, systemwide sales were nearly $1.4 billion and more than 173 million customers were served. The average customer check in 2005 was $8, according to the Web site. Also in the Boston Road area, a Famous Dave's Bar-B-Que is planned for Boston Road where a Ground Round used to be, company spokeswoman Debbie Tucker said. Famous Dave's is a national chain with one Massachusetts location, in Braintree. There is no date set yet for the opening of a Red Robin Gourmet Burgers planned for the new Big Y plaza in Wilbraham, said Barbara Convery, general manager at the Red Robin in Holyoke. She said work has begun at the site. Business writer Jim Kinney contributed to this story. ...
