Lahser downs Fitzgerald, advances to semifinal
Found: 4 Days 23 Hours 48 Minutes ago
Hometown Life - Dan Loria's Bloomfield Hills Lahser football teams have never lost a regional championship game. That perfection remained intact Saturday night as the Knights rallied for a thrilling 21-17 victory over Warren Fitzgerald.Lahser, which also won regional titles in 2002 and 2005, now advances to the Division 3 state semifinal against Inkster. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 22 at Birmingham Seaholm High School. The host Knights trailed Fitzgerald by 10 points at halftime. The Spartans, which had never been to a regional title game, scored 17 points in the second quarter and led 17-7 entering the third quarter."I think at that point of the game (Fitzgerald) was flying high on their side, but we had the momentum coming out of halftime,"said Loria, whose team is taking an 11-game winning streak into the semifinal round of the state playoffs. "We were down by 10 points...a couple of scores and we can take the lead. We wanted to grab the momentum and take it back."Lahser grabbed the momentum right away. The Knights scored on their second play from scrimmage when senior tailback Tevin Gibson raced 62 yards down the left sideline - thanks to a key block from wide receiver Mike Hafeli - to get Lahser to within three points at 17-14 after Cody Henderson booted the extra point. With just two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Lahser took the lead for good when senior quarterback Drew Jackson scrambled out of the pocket and hit wide receiver Zach Dauch on an exciting 83-yard touchdown reception. Henderson again hit the extra point for a 21-17 lead which ultimately would hold up until the final gun.Fitzgerald entered Lasher territory on three of its five second-half possessions. All three times the Spartans were forced to punt the ball away.Lahser took a 7-0 lead with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter on a 24-yard run by Gibson.Fitzgerald, which ended the season with a school-record 10-2 mark, scored a pair of touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter. Senior Jacob Young hit a 26-yard field goal, while talented junior tailback Edwin Limmitt ran for short touchdown runs from two yards out.Gibson led Lahser with 159 yards rushing on 23 carries. Jackson completed 11-16 passes for 146 yards. Hafeli caught four passes for 68 yards....
