Spector, Taub race finally goes to the voters Found: 2 Weeks 2 Days 17 Hours 38 Minutes ago Hometown Life - It will be a showdown between a commissioner who has the job and someone who wants it back."I consider this a step up from the state House,"said Shelley Goodman Taub of her decision to seek a return to the Oakland County Commission. "I enjoyed my bipartisan work in Lansing ... but there is a lot you can't get done in Lansing."Taub held the 16th District County Commission seat before heading to Lansing as a state rep. She served her time there and was term limited out of a job. She's now looking to return to familiar territory ?a county commission that has been dominated by Republicans for decades. Incumbent Democrat Karen Spector doesn't plan to get out of her way. In fact, she's counting on the Dems gaining control of the commission after the polls close later tonight. If it happens, change will soon follow."I think it is important to start having our meetings at night,"she said. "Government should be open and accessible to the public. The meetings could also be on cable."She also wants to launch another effort to get a comprehensive anti-bullying program throughout the county. Spector is against building a new jail and instead wants to focus on prevention and rehabilitation efforts. She said she provides strong budgetary oversight and that will continue if she is re-elected.Taub isn't so sure the commission has been keeping an eye on the till while she's been gone."There is fat in every budget,"she said. "I'd like to see a zero-based budget for all departments. I want to get down to counting paper clips."Taub said the leadership of County Executive L. Brooks Patterson has been key in the county's AAA bond rating, so overall the finances are in good shape. But she wants to make sure they stay that way by taking a second look at vendor contracts and perks like uniform cleaning for sheriff's deputies....
