RU teachers, supporters rally for contract Found: 2 Months 1 Week 3 Days 21 Hours 55 Minutes ago Hometown Life - With chants of, "Pay teachers, not lawyers,"and picket signs calling for a contract, teachers took their fight with the Redford Union School District to the streets Monday.Teachers, who have been working under a contract imposed in 2007 by the cash-strapped district, marched with supporters outside the RU administration building on Beech Daly before the Board of Education meeting. Organizers claimed nearly 200 protesters, including fellow teachers from districts as far as Brighton and Port Huron. Many wore light green T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan, "Your children = Our priority."Once the meeting began, dozens of protesters stayed for 20 minutes more, braving a steady rain to chant on the lawn outside. Board members inside the packed meeting room got an earful, too."Your teachers are giving their best to the students of this community, and it is your job to meet them halfway,"said Iris Salters, president of the Michigan Education Association, the parent union of the Redford Union Education Association.RU teachers feel devalued, Salters said during the public comment portion of the meeting. "They are staying because of this community and the children that they teach,"she said.Terri Buechs, a teacher at the Keeler Center, accused officials of arrogance for imposing a contract."Never in our history has this been done,"she said. The imposition of the contract is the subject of two unfair labor practice claims by the union. One claim has been argued by lawyers from each side and is awaiting a judge's decision, while the other has yet to be heard. The RUEA represents about 260 teachers and support employees, such as social workers and counselors. The employees have not had a bargaining agreement since August 2005, and those at the top of the pay scale haven't had raises in five years. The imposed contract withholds $1,500 a year from each RUEA member's paycheck, and mandates higher prescription costs. In May, the union overwhelmingly voted down a contract proposal that would have given 1-percent raises to those at the top of the scale and would have required members to pay health-care deductibles that were somewhat lower than the current withholding.District officials, meanwhile, have been fighting to reduce a budget deficit estimated at more than $3.4 million about three years ago. The $30 million budget for the district's current fiscal year puts RU on track to erase the deficit by next July, officials say.The union made a counter proposal last month, and the district is working to schedule negotiations, RU Supt. Donna Rhodes said. She said Monday she hoped a deal could be reached by Christmas.Union backers weren't limited to RUEA members and teachers from other districts. District residents also turned out to show support."I have never, ever, ever seen the dissension that I've seen in the district,"said township resident Barbara Smith, who sent her children to RU schools."My children got an excellent education. I want that for the children who live in Redford Union district now,"she added.School board members had varying responses to the expressions of anger and frustration."I'm confused as to why they voted no on a contract that would've lowered their health-care costs,"Trustee Sherri Caloia said."I'd love to give the teachers everything they want. We just don't have it,"Trustee Patricia Isabell said.Isabell added: "There are a lot of good teachers in the district that I appreciate very much."...
