Thursday: Hunting Harvest Down, Mine Worker Aid, Toilet Robber Found: 12 Hours 48 Minutes ago Flathead Beacon - Good morning and happy birthday Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
On the Beacon this morning, hunting harvest numbers are lagging so far, due mainly to the mild temperatures and lack of snow. The economic downturn is making it tougher for developers on Kalispell's north side to lock down commercial retail tenants. Two men died in separate crashes near Kalispell yesterday. The Lake McDonald Lodge coffee shop is being added to the National Register of Historic Places. In Whitefish, the North Valley Music School is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a "playathon"at the Mountain Mall. Recounts Unlikely to Alter Tight House Race Results Found: 12 Hours 48 Minutes ago Flathead Beacon - Over at FlatheadMemo.com, local blogger James Conner crunches the numbers on the two state House district recounts, and the likelihood of those recounts causing a flip in election results. One of the tightest races in the state was Kalispell's House District 8, where Democratic newcomer Cheryl Steenson beat incumbent Republican Craig Witte by just 20 votes. The other race up for recount is Laurel's Hosue District 58. Conner writes:
"Because of Montana?s peculiar law governing tied elections (the governor picks the winner), the requirements for winning the recount are higher for Witte than for Woerner. In HD-8, assuming no new votes are found (a risky assumption that I?ll discuss below), Witte wins if 11 votes are subtracted from Steenson?s total and added to Witte?s. In HD-58, Woerner ties ?which means he wins, thanks to the tie breaking system ?if 11 votes are subtracted from Kerns?total and added to Woerner?s."Check out the whole blog here....
Magnum Photographer Brings the World?s Slums to Light Found: 12 Hours 54 Minutes ago Flathead Beacon - "In 2008, for the first time in history, more people will live in cities than in rural areas.
One-third of these urban dwellers -more than 1 billion people -live in slums."These are the opening words of Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen's multimedia exploration of the world's slums, The Places We Live. From 2005 to 2007, Bendiksen documented sixteen homes in four different slum areas: Caracas, Venezuela; Mumbai, India; Nairobi, Kenya; and Jakarta Indonesia. The images he has captured are phenomenal (that's and understatement) and are accentuated by the ambient sounds of the streets and interviews with the inhabitants. Each room is a 360-degree panoramic ?the colors and the stories are captivating.
The touring multimedia exhibition is currently installed at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, where it was launched in June of 2008.
The online exhibition can be seen (here) and is worth the look. The accompanying book -which includes 20 double-gatefold images -has made my Christmas wish list for sure....
Update: State House Power Struggle Underway Found: 12 Hours 55 Minutes ago Flathead Beacon - UPDATE: Republicans today sent out a news release with more party leadership criticizing Democratic House Speaker Bob Bergren of Havre for what they call an "unprecedented power grab."State GOP Chairman Erik Iverson, former gubernatorial candidate Roy Brown, and former Republican leader Bob Marks of Clancy weigh in:
?Montana voters elected 50 Republicans and 50 Democrats to the House of Representatives. Folks expect legislators to share leadership and conduct the people?s business diplomatically and cooperatively as done in past split sessions,?GOP Chairman Erik Iverson said. ?Speaker-elect Bergren's unprecedented power grab sets a hostile, highly partisan tone for the upcoming session. I'm still hopeful that cooler heads will prevail and that fair-minded Democrat Party leaders will step in and stop this plan.?...
