Ex-Woodbridge cop convicted of sexual assault to get new trial Found: 2 Weeks 20 Hours 6 Minutes ago Asbury Park Press - A former Woodbridge police officer convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage boy for three years and taking lurid pictures of a 15-year-old girl in a separate case will get a new trial.A state appeals court ruled Friday, Aug. 15, that Douglas Karlson, 48, was denied a fair trial because the two crimes were not separated in his indictment."In our view, the prejudice in this case was overwhelming,''the court wrote. "The charges relating to (the girl), while no doubt serious, were not as inflammatory as the ones relating to (the boy.) (The boy's) testimony clearly had the effect of inflaming the jury.''The two cases were distinct enough to be dealt with separately, the three-judge panel ruled.Karlson was sentenced to 17 years in February 2007.He was convicted in July 2006 of official misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child for taking topless photographs of the 15-year-old girl. That same jury could not agree on the charges involving the sexual assault of the boy, now in his 20s.During a December 2006 retrial, Karlson was convicted of the sexual attacks that allegedly occurred between 1994 and 1997 when the boy was 14 to 17 years old.The victim of his sexual assaults told Superior Court Judge Frederick DeVesa, sitting in New Brunswick, during the sentencing about the legacy of those attacks."To this day, I still have nightmares,''the man said. "I was too scared (as a child) to press charges.''...
