GOP says Corzine's economic response inadequate

Asbury Park Press - TRENTON -- Republican state lawmakers Tuesday said Gov. Jon S. Corzine has to do more to make New Jersey business friendly as Wall Street groans with strain amid a massive government intervention."The governor's decision yesterday is at best inadequate,"said Senate Minority Leader Thomas Kean Jr., R-Union. "We can't afford the same old tired ideas."Corzine had said Monday he would work with energy companies and smaller, healthy banks to provide a short-term jolt to the New Jersey economy. He also called for new school and road construction projects to create jobs.Corzine's remarks came after an emergency economic roundtable with some two dozen business and labor leaders held in Newark."It seemed like a glorified Chamber of Commerce luncheon,"Sen. Joseph Kyrillos Jr., R-Monmouth, said of the Corzine-hosted gathering."The working class family in New Jersey is now on the endangered-species list,"said Sen. Steven Oroho, R-Sussex."We need a joint session of the Legislature"and a reopening of the state budget, said Assemblyman Joseph Malone III, R-Burlington, ranking GOP member of the Assembly Budget Committee.The Assembly Labor Committee held a hearing Monday about the impact on the state economy and its residents of the upheaval in the nation's credit and finance markets. The Senate budget committee will hold a similar hearing Oct. 6 that will also focus on the impact on state revenues and pension investments.Kean said he would advance the GOP's ideas in upcoming discussions with Corzine and other Democratic leaders....
