Reward tripled as Hillside school suffers more vandalism Found: 4 Months 3 Weeks 3 Days 17 Hours 56 Minutes ago Asbury Park Press - The reward has been tripled for information about vandalism at Hillside Intermediate School during the past two months.Somerset County Crime Stoppers has increased the reward from $500 to $1,500 after more vandalism was reported at the school between July 3 and 7.A gazebo at the school was damaged during the holiday weekend, said Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne J. Forrest.Somebody also climbed onto the school roof and damaged an electrical box and roof vents with an unknown object, Forrest said.During May and June, vandals sprayed graffiti on school buildings, ripped out an underground sprinkler system and damaged rails and fences that are part of the school's nationally certified wildlife habitat.In addition, in early June, two birdhouses were vandalized, resulting in the death of five baby bluebirds that were part of a student ecological project.Hillside School has received national recognition for its environmental programs and was recognized at a White House ceremony in 2000 after winning the President's Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) for a student study on habitat loss and the effects on wildlife populations within the community.The Jane Goodall Institute recognized Hillside in 2004 for its commitment to the environment. In December, the National Wildlife Federation certified Hillside's Meadows and Trails as an official Wildlife Habitat, according to the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District Web site. The school earned the honor because of its commitment to habitat enhancement and sustainable gardening practices that allows wildlife to live in safe habitat....
