Found: 1 Week 6 Days 13 Hours 40 Minutes ago
Asbury Park Press - FREEHOLD -- A 29-year-old Hazlet man pleaded guilty today to vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal drunken driving accident in Middletown, according to a release by the Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin.Christopher M. Brozyna, who was employed as a state trooper when the crash occurred, pleaded guilty before Judge Anthony J. Mellaci, Jr. to second-degree vehicular homicide and to a motor vehicle violation of driving while intoxicated, authorities reported. The plea deal, brokered by Gregory J. Schweers, an assistant Monmouth County prosecutor, calls for Brozyna to serve a five-year term in state prison for the vehicular homicide. He must serve 85 percent of the sentence before being eligible for parole under the "No Early Release Act."The collision, which happened 12:10 a.m. Sept. 14, 2007, took the life of Ernesto Stamaria, 55, of Old Bridge. Stamaria was driving a 1997 GMC Jimmy sport-utility vehicle north on Route 35 in the right lane when the vehicle was struck from behind by a 2007 Ford Mustang with an intoxicated Brozyna at the wheel. Stamaria was ejected when his vehicle spun and overturned just south of Chestnut Street. Stamaria was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was pronounced dead about three hours later.Following the crash, Brozyna was transported to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank for treatment of minor injuries. Laboratory testing of Brozyna's blood showed his blood alcohol concentration was "substantially in excess''of .08 percent, Valentin said in the release.Marisa R. Godleski, 24, of Boonton was a passenger in Brozyna's vehicle, but was not injured. Stamaria was alone at the time of the crash.Brozyna surrendered to authorities at Middletown Police Headquarters a week after the crash accompanied by his attorney, Charles J. Uliano of West Long Branch. Brozyna was suspended without pay effective on the date of his surrender.Brozyna's law enforcement career began 22 months prior to the crash and ended when he was suspended as a state trooper after his surrender. He has lost the right to ever hold a job in the employment of the state of New Jersey, authorities said.Brozyna's plea agreement was negotiated with the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and with the approval of Stamaria's family. After his release from prison, Brozyna will be subject to monetary fines for driving while intoxicated charge and he also faces a minimum mandatory driver's license revocation for five years, and a potential revocation for life. The revocation will begin when Brozyna is released from prison.Brozyna's bail was set at $50,000 with the 10 percent option which he posted at the time of his arrest and he is scheduled for sentencing Feb. 13....
