Stafford school's e-mail notification system saves cash Found: 2 Weeks 5 Days 7 Hours 17 Minutes ago Asbury Park Press - An in-house e-mail system that was developed after a religious group won a court case against the township's elementary school district has helped the district save approximately $10,000 a month, school officials said. The Community Email Notification System (CENS) was developed in 2004 after the Missouri-based Child Evangelism Fellowship challenged the district's stand against circulating its fliers.A Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that group should be allowed to distribute fliers about its after-school Bible club.Instead of appealing the court ruling, the district decided to start the e-mail notification system that is open to all groups at http://notice.staffordschools.org/.The system has approximately 2,000 subscribers. A subscriber can choose from a variety of notifications, including school events and community events ranging from Boy Scout Troop 91 to Families for Autistic Children Educational &Support Groups.Event e-mail will not be sent to people unless they sign up for those events. There are 39 organizations outside of the district and foundation that are registered users of the system, said Karina Monanian, public relations coordinator for the district. The system is open to any one in the municipality, not just parents, Monanian said."The system has been a huge success,''said Superintendent Ronald L. Meinders. "If a parent wants to get notification about the program, they can sign up for it.''The system also saves the district lots of money each month, Meinders said."We save, on average, $10,000 a month on photocopying, including paper, ink and machine usage,''Meinders said. "With school budgets so tight right now, we are looking for any place to save money.''CENS also has allowed the district to cut down on the time it takes to copy the fliers carried home by students."In the past, secretaries would spend a ton of time coping different fliers to go home with students, and there was no guarantee that they would make it home,''Meinders said. "But with this system, the parents do not have to worry about that, if they have signed up.''The system is copyrighted and already is being used by other districts, including Little Egg Harbor School District, Meinders said."The technology department did a great job in developing this system,''Meinders said. "Other districts have asked about using it.''In addition to allowing other districts to use the system, the district could allow businesses to be part of it for a fee, Meinders said."We have not decided on that,''Meinders said. "But it could happen where a supermarket could be put on the list of items that a person is interested in. It is a possibility.''...
